The La Liga soccer league is the top division of Spanish soccer, and perhaps in Europe. Real Madrid and Barcelona have won the Champions League a number of times, and they have had many of Europe’s most exciting club teams. Many of the game’s great players have played in the league, and these are a few of the La Liga legends.
Diego Maradona
Maradona was Argentina’s Pele, and when he joined Barcelona, he did so with a record transfer fee. Maradona did not play that many games in La Liga, but still scored 22 goals for the Spanish giants. At the international level, Maradona inspired Argentina’s 1986 World Cup triumph, with FIFA’s Goal of the Century scored against England in the quarter-finals. Then Maradonna dribbled past much of the England team before scoring the second winning goal. Alongside Pele, Maradona was FIFA Player of the 20th Century.
Cristiano Ronaldo
Cristiano Ronaldo is the highest-scoring player in Real Madrid’s history. This forward scored more than a goal a game when playing for Madrid. He scored an astonishing 48 goals in the 2014–2015 La Liga season. Ronaldo reached the 100-goal mark in La Liga in fewer games than any other player. Overall, he is the second-highest-scoring player in La Liga history.
Raul González
Raul played over 500 La Liga matches with Real Madrid, a record number for the club. During that period, Raul scored 228 La Liga goals for the club. He scored 71 more goals in the Champions League. The striker won La Liga six times with Madrid, as well as three Champions League titles.
Lionel Messi
Messi is perhaps even better than Maradona because this forward had more impact in La Liga. Messi has won the FIFA World Player of the Year award eight times. The forward has been the fulcrum of the great Barcelona teams that have lit up European soccer, winning four Champions League titles and numerous La Liga titles. Messi scored a record five goals in a single Champions League game. With Argentina, Messi also emulated Maradona by winning the FIFA World Cup in 2022, scoring two goals against France in the final.
Johan Cruyff
Cruyff was a fantastic playmaker who starred for Barcelona. The player won the La Liga title with them in 1974, as well as the Spanish Cup (Copa del Rey). During that period, Cruyff was probably the best player in world soccer and inspired the Netherlands to the 1974 FIFA World Cup final. As team manager, Cruyff also won many La Liga titles with Barcelona and their first European Cup triumph in the 1990s.
Zinedine Zidane
Zidane starred for some great Real Madrid teams. This player played in the midfield, just behind the forwards. For Real Madrid, Zidane won the La Liga title as well as the Champions League. In the Champions League final, Zidane sealed their victory with a great volley. With France, Zidane was probably their most exciting player since Platini and scored two goals in the FIFA World Cup final to seal a 3–0 triumph against Brazil.
