The Philadelphia Eagles franchise quarterback Jalen Hurts was under a ton of heat after a late-season collapse a season ago, and a shaky start to the 2024 season. The criticism was warranted because the organization rewarded Hurts with a five-year, $255 million extension before the 2023 season. He wasn’t meeting expectations from Week 13 of last year through Week 4 of this year.

It’s Time To Apologize To Jalen Hurts.

Hurts flipped a switch after the team’s Week 5 bye week. He had gone nine straight regular-season games with at least one turnover, dating back to last year. He threw nine interceptions and lost four fumbles in that span. Hurts has played three consecutive turnover-free games during the winning streak since the bye, and it’s exactly the version of him that Philadelphia needs.

Hurts is doing a solid job at managing the games and not trying to do too much. Philly’s signal-caller is 42-for-59 for a 71 percent completion percentage over the last three weeks. He has 614 passing yards and nine total touchdowns since the bye week. He’s had a passer rating over 119 in the last three games, including a season-high passer rating of 132.5 in Week 8 against the Cincinnati Bengals.

The Eagles had sky-high expectations heading into 2024 after making notable additions to the roster and coaching staff. Fans and people around the league began to question how good this team was after starting the season with a 2-2 record. The entire team was experiencing issues, but something seemed to click after the bye week. They have outscored opponents 85-36 since Week 6 and seem to have found their identity.

Hurts finished second in MVP voting after an incredible 2022 season that ended just short of a Super Bowl championship. He was an MVP favorite through the first 12 weeks of last season before the Eagles’ implosion. The 26-year-old is starting to find that MVP level of play during the previous three weeks. Hurts has the Eagles flying high heading into the second half of the season.

The Eagles don’t need Hurts to light up the sky with passes or force any run plays. The way he’s playing right now is exactly what the Eagles need. As long as Hurts is efficient and takes what the defense gives him, the Eagles will continue to win games. He’s not Tom Brady or Patrick Mahomes, but Hurts is talented enough to take the Eagles to the promised land if he makes intelligent decisions and protects the football.
