Marc-André ter Stegen was once a player widely respected by FC Barcelona’s fans, the Culers. He was the captain that many looked up to, and a goalkeeper that many teams envied. Unfortunately, as the 2025/26 season approached, issues centered around his person caused serious problems for Barca.
Ter Stegen made his official debut for FC Barcelona in 2014, during a Champions League game against APOEL Nicosia FC. Ever since then, he has made over 400 appearances for the team. Throughout his time on the team, he won six La Liga titles, as well as the Champions League. In the 2024/25 season, under the new coach Hansi Flick, he became Barca’s Captain.
Unfortunately, the 2024/25 season wasn’t the high ter Stegen might have hoped it to be. He started it as Barcelona’s number one goalkeeper and with the new armband on his arm, but the joy only lasted until September. It was then that he suffered a serious knee injury that would keep him out of the game until April.
With ter Stegen out of the picture, Barcelona’s number two goalkeeper, Iñaki Peña, stepped into the goal. This left the team in need of a new reserve goalkeeper outside of the usual transfer window. After a while, they signed the recently retired Wojciech Szczęsny. Sooner rather than later, Szczęsny was given the starting position, while Peña returned to the bench.
Ter Stegen returned before the end of the 2025/26 season. All three goalkeepers remained signed by the team, with a fourth one, Joan Garcia, being added soon after. Despite the team’s abundance of goalies, the ter Stegen situation seemed contained.
The Culers soon found out that the ter Stegen-related problems were only beginning. In July, the goalkeeper underwent a back surgery that left him unable to play for a couple of months. If he were classified as a long-term absentee, FC Barcelona could go on to use 80% of his salary to register new players, such as the aforementioned Garcia, or the new forward, Marcus Rashford. For his absence to be classified as long-term, he would have to be out for at least four months. On his social media, ter Stegen claimed that he would only be sidelined for three.
This began a dispute between ter Stegen and the club, especially since he also reportedly hasn’t allowed Barca to share his medical data with La Liga. In the first week of August, he was stripped of his captain’s armband. Barcelona has also reportedly begun disciplinary proceedings against him.
The situation has been resolved only recently. On the eighth of August, all proceedings against ter Stegen were dropped, and he was reinstated as captain. He was said to have signed all the necessary forms, giving Barcelona the chance to send his medical reports to the La Liga officials. The goalkeeper claimed that it wasn’t true that the team used his injury as a way to sign new players and that all transfers were completed before his surgery.

While the situation has been seemingly rectified, it still left an unpleasant taste in the mouths of all of Barcelona’s fans. Ter Stegen used to be one of the most loved and admired players; now, many would love to see him off the team for good. At the same time, he has always expressed his love for the team, and there is no reason to believe that he would want to harm it in any way. Maybe the terrible misunderstanding was just that: a misunderstanding.
