The 1960s had some great soccer teams and players in what was an enthralling decade for the sport during the early TV era. Some of the finest soccer players in history played during the decade. These are a few of the great soccer players of the 1960s.

Pele

To many (myself included), Pele is the finest soccer player in history. Pele played the best part of his career during the 1960s when he starred for Brazil and Santos. For Brazil, Pele played in the FIFA World Cups during the 1960s and won the 1962 tournament. In other World Cups, such as 1970, Pele was one of the best players in the tournament and scored four goals, including one in the final against Italy. Pele had great ball skills and an excellent goal-scoring record, scoring more than 1000 goals for club and country, many of which during the 1960s.

Jimmy Greaves

Jimmy Greaves was one of the top strikers of the 1960s. For both Tottenham and England, Greaves scored lots of goals. For England, Greaves scored 44 goals in 57 games, one of the best goal-scoring averages of any England player.

He was a first-choice striker for England in 1966, but injury ruled him out of the final. For Tottenham, Greaves set scoring records with a club record of 266 goals and was the top goal-scoring player four times. Such goals helped Spurs win two FA Cups and the Cup Winners’ Cup during the 1960s.

Euesibo

Euesibo was Portugal’s and Benfica’s forward who played a starring role for club and country. For Portugal, he played some of his best games in the 1966 World Cup when they finished third. In this World Cup, Euesibo was the top goal-scoring player and scored nine goals in total.

At club level, he played for the Benfica team that dominated Portuguese soccer during the 1960s, scoring more than a goal a game, and also won the European Cup in 1962. In 1965, Euesibo was also the European Cup’s top goal-scoring player with nine goals and European Soccer Player of the Year.

Bobby Moore

Moore was England’s World Cup-winning captain, who played in all of England’s 1966 World Cup games and was a great defender. In addition to this, Moore played over 100 games for England, including games in the 1970 World Cup. With West Ham, he won the FA Cup and the UEFA Cup in 1964 and 1965. Bobby was also a great example to other players because he never got booked during his playing career.

Bobby Charlton

Bobby Charlton was another of the golden generation of England players from the 1960s. He was an attacking midfielder and one of the stars of England’s World Cup-winning team in 1966, who scored crucial goals against Portugal in the semi-final. Charlton scored 49 goals for England, which remained a record number until Wayne Rooney and Harry Kane broke it more recently. In my opinion, he was the best midfielder ever to play for England.

This player is also a Manchester Utd legend who played for some of that club’s great teams. Charlton scored two of Utd’s goals in the 4-1 victory against Benfica in the 1968 European Cup final. He also won three league titles and an FA Cup with the Red Devils.
