On the other side, the Belgians, the feisty Group G winners, fresh off a dominant 4-1 victory over the United States Men’s National Team. Only one of these hungry fanbases could be sent home happy.
Spain’s offense stood out early in this one, with elite ball movement and footwork. Belgium’s defense was initially up to the task, executing a couple of key blocks to keep it scoreless for an extended period. That is, until the 30th minute, when midfielder Fabián Ruiz jammed home a juicy rebound from a Dani Olmo try, giving Spanish fans a one-goal lead. They didn’t let up there, including a tense corner and free kick just outside the box within five minutes.
It looked hopeless for Belgium until the 41st minute, when their first shot on target was a goal. Midfielder Charles De Ketelaere headed home a beautiful cross, tying it up just moments before the half-time whistle.
Spain continued to control in the second half, but Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was initially up to the task. Things changed moments before the hydration break, when he fell to the ground. Courtois didn’t leave initially, but mere seconds after play resumed, he left the pitch, visibly emotional. Backup keeper Senne Lammens entered the high-pressure situation.
Belgium’s defense held strong for a period, maintaining their shape and poise under constant attack. Spain’s pressure was ultimately rewarded with a rebound goal from midfielder Mikel Merino in the 88th minute. Both teams traded high-pressure moments down the stretch, but the score finished 2-1.
