SEC basketball is one of the premier conferences in college basketball. Let us analyze the top ten teams that have been performing the best in this league so far:

1. Auburn

SEC Basketball, Johni Broome

Auburn jumps into the top spot after the Tennessee loss on Tuesday night. Auburn is playing as well as anybody in the country, not just the SEC. They are vying for a top seed in the tournament and are currently the favorites to win the SEC. Bruce Pearl also becomes Auburn’s all-time winningest coach—fun times on the plains!

2. Alabama

Alabama comes in as the number two team in the SEC. The Tide are playing as well as anybody in the country right now, Preseason All-American guard Mark Sears is the biggest reason. When this offense is rolling, they are hard to stop, and that was the case Wednesday night against South Carolina. Mouhamed Dioubate and Jarin Stevenson played big minutes for them as well; this is a well-oiled machine when they are on their game.

3. Tennessee

Tennessee slides into the third spot this week after the loss to Florida. In many cases, I’d have the Vols in the second spot, but with Alabama’s win and Tennessee’s blowout at the hands of the Gators, these spots were adjusted. Tennessee travels to Texas this weekend to try and get back on track after the loss to Florida, where they just never stepped off the bus.

4. Kentucky

Kentucky remains in the fourth spot this week, despite a loss against Georgia. Their recent victory over Florida at home helps them maintain this position. This weekend, Kentucky is set to travel to Mississippi State for a game that is crucial for the Wildcats.

5. Florida

Florida has moved up to the fifth spot this week following their win over Tennessee on Tuesday night. The backcourt duo of Clayton Jr. and Martin is proving to be a potent combination, ranking among the best in the country. With their talent, Florida has a high ceiling in college basketball and is considered one of the favorites to reach the Final Four when they are performing at their best.

6. Mississippi St

Mississippi State is making strides in the rankings. Josh Hubbard has emerged as one of the top guards in the country, especially when he’s in a position to shoot. The Bulldogs continue to climb week after week, and this weekend they’re set to host Kentucky in a significant matchup that could have major implications for the rankings. Keep an eye on these Bulldogs in Starkville—they’re a force to be reckoned with.

7. Texas A&M

The Aggies have shown they belong in this league, ranking eighth, which suggests we’re in for an exciting season. With their strong defensive capabilities and players like Wade Taylor hitting their stride, this team could make some serious noise in the tournament. If they maintain that level of play, a deep run seems very possible!

8. Ole Miss Rebels

Chris Beard’s team is once again making waves. They excel in defense, can shoot effectively, and are incredibly physical—a hallmark of Beard’s coaching style from his time at Texas Tech and Texas. Currently, the Rebels boast a 2-0 record in conference play and are allowing only 33 points per game, a promising indicator for their defensive prowess. In basketball, defense travels, and it’s clear that this team has the potential for a significant run this season.

9. Georgia

Georgia has climbed to ninth in the rankings following their victory over Kentucky on Tuesday night. The team is led by freshman Asa Newell, who is considered one of the top freshmen in the country. Under the leadership of Mike White, Georgia has put together a strong team this season. Newell has certainly lived up to the expectations, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Dawgs receiving votes in next week’s polls or even making a jump after their win against Kentucky.

10. Oklahoma

Oklahoma stays here even with the loss to Texas A&M. SEC is just brutal this year and even with the loss this Sooner team is still 13-2 even with the two losses in SEC play. Every night in the SEC it’s going to be a war and a trial by error, and if the Sooners can hold serve and win the majority of the games they need to win, I could see this team making noise down the stretch, especially with Jeremiah Fears leading the way.

End Of My SEC Basketball Rant

It’s only the second week of January, and these rankings will change. A few of the teams not listed do have a chance at breaking into the SEC basketball picture, and one of those is Vanderbilt. With the loss to Mississippi State earlier in the week, I decided to stick with Oklahoma. As far as the others go, it’s a wait-and-see approach, and possibly bubble teams will emerge on this side, including Missouri, LSU, and Texas and Arkansas playing factors too. Overall, SEC Basketball is the best conference and should be exciting as we move forward
