Sami Zayn has rejected the idea that a WWE Champion needs to fit a particular physical mould. The Undisputed WWE Champion addressed the criticism days after regaining the title.
Speaking on Busted Open Radio, Zayn argued that physiques, moves, and presentation are simply different routes to the same destination. The destination is an audience that cares.
Getting jacked is part of the appeal, in his view, but only one method among many. Zayn said an emotional connection matters more than appearance, and he pointed to the reaction his stories have drawn throughout his career as proof.
“If you can get people to care, that’s the game,” Zayn said.
Questions about Zayn’s presentation have followed him at different points in WWE. Former WWE and WCW writer Vince Russo is among those who have questioned the decision to put the title on him. He argued on the Coach and Bro Show that Zayn is not someone casual viewers will tune in to watch as champion.
Zayn has answered with results. The Montreal native arrived from NXT as a former NXT Champion. Programs with The Bloodline, Kevin Owens, and Roman Reigns turned him into one of the most popular acts on the roster. Four Intercontinental Championship reigns and two United States Championship runs sit on his record.
Zayn won the first world title of his career at Night of Champions on June 27, beating Cody Rhodes and Gunther in a triple threat match. The reign lasted nine days. Gunther attacked Rhodes ahead of the scheduled rematch on the July 6 Raw, and CM Punk stepped in and took the title instead.
The return bout came on the September 11 SmackDown at Arena Ciudad de Mexico. Johnny Gargano and Candice LeRae worked ringside for Zayn, with LeRae distracting the referee and Gargano missing a belt shot that earned him a Go To Sleep from Punk.
Owens arrived to stop Zayn from using the championship as a weapon. The swing missed, and he caught Punk in the head, and a Helluva Kick ended it. Zayn is now in his second reign as Undisputed WWE Champion. The title has changed hands five times in 2026, after runs by Drew McIntyre, Rhodes, Zayn, and Punk.
Zayn is right, and the people arguing with him have the business backwards. Wrestling has never paid off on measurements. The Bloodline saga worked because the least likely man in the room kept edging closer to the top, and audiences could not look away.
The look criticism misses what actually makes Zayn valuable. Nobody else on the roster sounds like him, moves like him, or builds a crowd the way he does on a live microphone. Uniqueness is the rarest commodity in a company stocked with athletes cut from the same template.
Zayn can also go in the ring. The matches with Reigns, Owens, and Gunther were not carried by anybody else in the ring. A performer who can work that level and talk that well does not need a bodybuilder’s frame to convince anyone.
Fans picked this champion on their own, over years, without a push forcing it. A champion chosen that way is worth more than a physique. Russo and everyone else can keep filing complaints, and Zayn will keep walking out with the title.
