Saints Vs Lions Prediction: 3 X-Factors Give New Orleans A Real Upset Chance

The Saints Vs Lions Prediction: I’m not only sharing this with all my readers, but I’m also making a big wager that New Orleans will pull off one of the biggest upsets of NFL Week 1.

Detroit enters Sunday’s game at Ford Field as a 6.5-point favorite, while New Orleans is +270 on the moneyline at FanDuel at the time of this update. The Lions deserve to be favored, but three X-factors give Tyler Shough and the Saints a legitimate path to an outright upset.

My predictions aren’t built around everyday stats you can find anywhere. I want to focus on the matchup details that can actually swing the game and then give my final score prediction.

My predictions don’t just give you a pick and wish you luck, I provide detail and my own personal opinion on the game. I also provide a final score prediction for each game I publish. Saints Vs Lions Prediction is New Orleans 27, Detroit 24.

Saints Vs Lions Odds Have Already Moved Toward New Orleans

The Saints and Lions kick off Sunday at 1 p.m. ET at Ford Field, with FOX carrying the game. The Saints official Week 1 game preview has the complete matchup information.

FanDuel opened New Orleans at +7 and +310 on the moneyline. The Saints are now +6.5 and +270, while Detroit has moved from -390 to -335. The total moved from 48.5 to 49.5.

That movement doesn’t predict an upset by itself, but it is enough to make this matchup worth a deeper look.

X-Factor No. 1: Detroit’s Missing Safeties Matter

The biggest reason my Saints Vs Lions Prediction has a legitimate upset case is Detroit’s situation at safety.

Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph are both listed on the reserve/PUP list entering Week 1. Those are two major pieces of Detroit’s secondary who will not be available against New Orleans.

That gives Tyler Shough and Chris Olave an area to attack.

Olave enters this matchup against a Detroit defense that allowed 217.4 passing yards per game last season. New Orleans doesn’t need Shough to win a shootout with Jared Goff. It needs him to protect the football, get Olave involved early and create enough explosive plays to make Detroit’s reshuffled secondary uncomfortable.

That is the matchup advantage I believe most strongly supports the upset case.

X-Factor No. 2: Tyler Shough Has To Take Advantage

If New Orleans wins, it will be because the Lions also overlooked the same thing that almost the entire world had overlooked as well. Shough is the biggest X-factor that can give the Saints the edge to pull the

He went 5-4 in nine starts last season while completing 67.6% of his passes for 2,384 yards, 10 touchdowns and six interceptions.

Those numbers give us more than blind optimism entering his second season.

Shough doesn’t need to play hero ball. He needs quick decisions, manageable third downs and opportunities for Olave to make plays against Detroit’s secondary.

If he protects the football and keeps New Orleans within one possession entering the fourth quarter, the Saints have the type of game they need to threaten the favorite.

X-Factor No. 3: New Orleans Has Injury Concerns Too

There is a reason Detroit is favored, and the Saints have their own problems to overcome.

FanDuel’s current injury listing has defensive end Cameron Jordan out with a hamstring injury and Alvin Kamara questionable with a knee injury. Those are two important situations to monitor before kickoff.

Jordan’s absence matters against a Detroit offense led by Jared Goff, Jahmyr Gibbs and Amon-Ra St. Brown. New Orleans cannot afford to let Goff settle into a rhythm or allow Gibbs to control the game on the ground.

Kamara’s status also matters to an offense that may need every available weapon to keep pace.

That is the risk behind this Saints Vs Lions Prediction. New Orleans has a matchup it can exploit, but Detroit still has the offensive talent to punish the Saints if they fail to control the game.

Best Bet For My Saints Vs Lions Prediction

If my prediction is that New Orleans wins outright, the moneyline is the bet that matches it.

At the time of this update, FanDuel lists New Orleans at +270 on the moneyline and +6.5 against the spread. Check the current Saints Vs Lions odds at FanDuel Research before placing a wager because the numbers can move before kickoff.

At +270, a $100 winning wager would produce $270 in profit plus the original stake.

My pick is Saints moneyline +270 at the price available at the time of this update, where legal and available.

End Of My Final Saints Vs Lions Prediction Rant

Detroit is the favorite for good reason. Goff, Gibbs and St. Brown give the Lions enough offensive firepower to punish New Orleans, especially with Jordan unavailable.

But I’m going the other way with my Saints Vs Lions Prediction.

Branch and Joseph being unavailable gives Shough and Olave a matchup worth attacking. If Shough protects the football, New Orleans takes advantage of Detroit’s secondary and the Saints keep this within one possession entering the fourth quarter, they have a legitimate path to the upset.

My final Saints Vs Lions Prediction is New Orleans 27, Detroit 24.

The pick is Saints moneyline +270 at FanDuel at the time of this update.

I’m calling the upset.
