The New Orleans Saints got active in free agency regarding their wide receiver room, bringing back former first-round draft pick Brandin Cooks. Pro Football Focus believes that the team shouldn’t be searching for help at the position. They are listed as a “perfect fit” for current free agent Amari Cooper.
The Saints are not currently able to win 10 or more games. It is an unfortunate reality, but it is the truth. As it is currently built, this team is navigating a delicate balance between competing for a championship and undergoing a full rebuild. With that in mind, imagining a world where Amari Cooper would drastically improve things in New Orleans isn’t easy.
Cooper is a longtime receiver with extensive experience, knowledge, and expertise. The problem is that he wouldn’t improve them enough to look him down, nor would Cooper want to get into a situation where he can’t win games routinely.
The Saints already boast Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed, and now they have Cooks. Adding Cooper as a third or fourth-string receiver doesn’t feel right. It would limit his impact on the game, and the team would incur additional financial losses due to his contract.
Part of the belief that Cooper would fit in with New Orleans is his history with quarterback Derek Carr. Carr played alongside Cooper for over three years with the formerly known Oakland Raiders. The assumption is that partnering these two could reignite a spark for both players, who are coming off down years.
The following reason is that the Saints do need offensive help. It was brutally obvious that this team struggled to score points, although most of that problem could be attributed to injuries sustained by Taysom Hill, Olave, Shaheed, and multiple offensive linemen.
Regardless of that, this team needs offensive firepower, which is why Cooper is being floated around as an idea and why the team signed Cooks to begin with.
If the Saints still aim to improve their offense, it would make significantly more sense to do so during the upcoming NFL Draft. New Orleans is famously in a tremendous hole regarding their salary cap situation.
It would only hurt them if they spent more money on a multi-year deal with Amari Cooper, a veteran wide receiver who likely wants to win now rather than sit through a rebuilding phase.
