Resulting in the biggest WWE Royal Rumble of all this, the event was a huge success. The excitement was in the air with so many legendary superstars fighting for their WrestleMania moment.
The WWE Royal Rumble started with a dream matchup, Rey Mysterio and Penta, kicking things off. Michael Cole struggled to keep up with the pace early, both stars nearly hitting the floor within seconds.
This was an example of good storytelling. In the preceding weeks, Gable trained to handle Luchadores with Mysterio’s son, Dominik. The luchadores would go two-on-one against the latest entrant, and Gable gained no momentum early.
Hayes and Gable created a temporary alliance to gain control of the luchadores. The alliance only lasted that long, as the two turned on each other at the first opportunity.
Escobar was not interested in the luchador alliance. Immediately hitting Mysterio with his own 619, then giving a Mexican Destroyer to Penta.
Breakker started hot, immediately eliminating Hayes, before hitting an avalanche of Frankensteiners and a spear. Breaker then easily tossed Escobar out of the match.
The recently eliminated Hayes attacked Tozawa during his entrance, and Tozawa was carried back to the gorilla position. Panicking to find his replacement, Triple H noticed IShowSpeed, and made him the new eighth entrant. Speed starts the match by helping Breakker eliminate Otis. Breakker thanked Speed with a lightning-quick spear and a press slam to the outside. Otis caught Speed for the save but delivered a fall away slam onto the announce table instead.
Fatu stacked Penta on top of Mysterio and hit a massive Samoan Drop before eliminating Mysterio and Gable. Andrade pounced on Fatu, only to get eliminated as well.
Kaiser waited at ringside for the most opportune time, only for Penta to reverse and toss him over the top, resulting in one of the shortest times in WWE Royal Rumble history.
Reigns eliminated Sheamus and Hendry but was then speared by Breakker. It appeared that Breakker was about to eliminate Reigns, but it was reversed, and Reigns eliminated Breakker. Jacob Fatu then eliminated Jimmy Uso, leaving only Reigns and himself standing in the ring, with Reigns winning the exchange after hitting a spear.
Finn Bálor eliminated Penta.
Jey Uso eliminated Nakamura.
Braun Strowman eliminated Fatu, who subsequently trashed the ringside area.
John Cena eliminated Strowman and Balor to come face to face with Reigns. Their moment was interrupted by the next entrant.
The three men faced off, letting the crowd soak it in.
Rollins started sprinting from the back, aimed straight at Punk. The crowd was exploding at the level of stardom in the ring.
In one of the best booking decisions of the evening, Dominik received one of the loudest heel boos of all time, changing the vibe, including hitting Cena with a frog splash. Reigns quickly won back the crowd, knocking some sense into “Dirty Dom”.
Damian Priest eliminated Dominik Mysterio.
Jey Uso accidentally eliminated Sami Zayn.
Damien Priest eliminated Drew McIntyre. LA Knight was then in an apron side brawl with Logan Paul, who jumped from the apron to the announce desk to avoid elimination. Knight eliminated Priest but was then eliminated by AJ Styles. Logan Paul, making it back to the ring, eliminated AJ Styles.
They worked a spot where all remaining superstars hit their finishers on each other. Afterward, Reigns and Rollins remained face to face. The two were fighting for position on the ropes, only to be eliminated by CM Punk. Of all people, Logan Paul eliminated Punk. Rollins and Punk would have to be separated by WWE officials at ringside.
A frustrated Rollins gave Reigns a curb Stomp on the steel steps. Officials at WWE Royal Rumble finally got control, and Punk turned his attention to Paul Heyman and Roman Reigns. All of this drama is at the ringside, but the rumble continues.
Jey Uso, Logan Paul, and John Cena remain. Cena stacked both men on his shoulders for a double attitude adjustment, but Uso was able to crawl off. Uso with a kick, then Cena with a clothesline, to Logan Paul to take it down to the final two.
Jey Uso and John Cena paused, letting the moment breathe. Going blow for blow, Cena gained control via his vintage shoulder tackles and Five Knuckle Shuffle. Uso, after all the damage, was able to stop Cena’s momentum with a spear.
Both men ended up on the wrong side of the ropes, battling anxiously on the apron. Cena got Uso up for an Attitude Adjustment, but Jey slipped back into the ring and pushed Cena to the floor.
“Main Event” Jey Uso has cemented a main event spot at WrestleMania. Is it a lock that he challenges Gunther at WrestleMania?
