The Syracuse Mets have had an underwhelming season so far. After 55 games, they have 25 wins and 30 losses. However, they have recently shown improvement by winning three out of their last four games, mainly due to Ronny Mauricio’s performance at the plate.

Mauricio has been on fire in his last three games, batting at a .562 average. He has hit one home run, scored five, and recorded six hits along with one walk. He is getting on base 58 percent of the time and has a slugging average of .936 during this stretch.

With the Syracuse Mets trailing by 13.5 games, the team is heavily relying on Mauricio to help close the gap. Given his impressive performance, the question arises: Will he remain with the team for long, or is a call-up to the major leagues with the orange and blue imminent for his second stint?

Ronny Mauricio And The Miracle Mets: A True Baseball Story

El Chimi has been with the Metropolitans since he signed as an international free agent in 2017. Since 2019, he has consistently ranked as a top 100 prospect each year, except for the lead-up to the 2023 season.

During his rookie season, Mauricio played for the organization’s rookie league teams, the Gulf Coast League (GCL) and the Kingsport Mets. In a combined 57 games, he achieved a batting average of .273, with 16 doubles, three triples, and three home runs. Starting his career strong, he drew attention to his potential as a player.

In 2019, he played for the Columbia Fireflies, the Mets’ A-level affiliate. Throughout 116 games, he achieved a batting average of .268, totaling 126 hits. This included 20 doubles, five triples, and four home runs while racking 37 RBI’s.

In 2020, the world was unable to see Mauricio or any of the Mets’ minor league teams due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which ultimately led to the cancellation of the season.

After a tumultuous year in 2020, Mauricio got back on track in 2021, picking up right where he left off. He played in 100 games for the Mets’ A+ Level team, the Brooklyn Cyclones, finishing the season with a .242 batting average, 14 doubles, five triples, and 19 home runs. Demonstrating greater power behind the plate, he was called up to the Mets’ AA-level team, the Binghamton Mets. Although he only appeared in eight games, he excelled, batting .323 with ten hits, including one double and one home run.

Mauricio returned to the Binghamton Mets for the 2022 season. He played in 123 games and achieved a batting average of .259, hitting the most home runs of his career so far with a total of 26. In addition to his home runs, he also recorded 26 doubles, two triples, 20 stolen bases, and drew 24 walks. By continuing to show his strength and speed on the base paths, he began to distinguish himself from other top prospects.

In 2023, Mauricio was promoted to the Syracuse Mets, the New York Mets’ AAA affiliate, where he had an outstanding season. He played in 116 games and achieved his best batting average to date, hitting .292. He recorded 23 home runs, 30 doubles, and three triples, making significant contributions to his team’s success. He also posted his highest OPS to date at .852, prompting the organization to call him up to the majors. While playing for the Mets, he experienced the usual challenges of being a rookie. In 26 games, he had a batting average of .248, hitting four doubles, two home runs, and driving in nine runs. This performance provided a solid foundation for him as he headed into the 2024 season.

Mauricio did not participate in the 2024 season. He tore his ACL in his right knee while playing for the Tigres del Licey in the Dominican Winter League. Due to scar tissue issues, this injury required two surgeries: one in January 2024 and another in August 2024.

2025 The Year Of Mauricio

At the beginning of the season, Mauricio was placed on the injured list and missed all of spring training. Once he was cleared to play, he completed several rehabilitation assignments with the Mets’ lower-level affiliates. After regaining his full health, he was reinstated to the Syracuse Mets, where he has performed remarkably well.

While in Port St. Lucie, where the Mets’ A-level affiliate is located, he played five games and only recorded a .133 batting average. With two hits in 15 at-bats, his start was disappointing, and he hoped for a better performance in his next rehab assignment.

Mauricio’s next stop was the Binghamton Mets. Having played there in 2021 and 2022, the fans were expecting an impressive performance. However, he struggled during his rehab assignment, finishing with a .118 batting average and two hits in 17 at-bats.

Upon arriving in Syracuse, Mauricio quickly settled in. In his first seven games, he posted an impressive .560 batting average, recording 14 hits, three home runs, one double, and seven RBIs. Although this is based on a limited sample size of just seven games, he achieved career-best figures with an on-base percentage (OBP) of .586, a slugging percentage (SLG) of .960, and an on-base plus slugging (OPS) of 1.546 while playing in Syracuse. If he maintains these outstanding numbers, the organization may have no choice but to promote him to the majors again.

How Will Mauricio Fit Into The Mets’ Current Roster

The versatility of Mauricio, who can play shortstop, second base, and third base, makes him easily integrated into the Mets’ 2025 active roster.

The most straightforward option is to send Jared Young back down to the minors. He has only played in five major league games this season, batting .200 with two hits—one home run and one double. Meanwhile, Mark Vientos has been serving as the designated hitter recently, allowing Brett Baty to excel at third base defensively and, as of late, at the plate. The Mets could potentially move Vientos to first base when needed, serving as the backup for Pete Alonso on days off. This would eliminate the need for Young on the roster.

Another option for the organization would be to send Brett Baty down to the minors. In the 2025 season so far, he has a batting average of .243, with 27 hits, six home runs, and one triple. When considering his entire season, it has been underwhelming. However, in the last seven games, he has shown significant improvement, boasting a .360 batting average with one home run and six RBIs. If he continues to perform at this high level, there would be no reason to move him. However, if his performance returns to how it was at the start of the season, it may open up the possibility of promoting Mauricio instead.

End Of My Mets Rant

The Mets should consider promoting Mauricio to the major leagues as soon as possible. He is performing exceptionally well at the plate, and the team could greatly benefit from his batting, especially since they’re having a very inconsistent season offensively. Currently, no player on the active roster is hitting above a .300 batting average, so introducing a new talent like Mauricio, who is thriving in AAA, would be a smart move.
