There are many quarterbacks available in the 2025 NFL Draft. Fans are hearing the same names every day: Cam Ward, Shedeur Sanders, and Jaxson Dart, to name a few. They are all great signal-callers with their own special talents.
If a team is not in a hurry to get a quarterback in the first round, Louisville’s Tyler Shough may be the man that they are looking for.
Shough is a sixth-year COVID-19 Senior at Louisville, making him the oldest quarterback in the draft.
The 25-year-old has played a great deal of college ball. He started out at Oregon before finishing with the Louisville Cardinals.
Last season, Shough showed off that significant velocity in his throwing arm. He passed for 3,195 yards, with 23 TDs and six interceptions.
The 6’5″, 225 lb. signal-caller also has pure accuracy to go with that big arm, completing 62.7% of his passes in college.
Shough is significantly older than the other quarterback prospects because he is a seventh-year college player who has two extra years of eligibility due to the COVID-19 eligibility rule.
The Louisville Cardinal will be the last quarterback from this group to benefit from this exemption, as the past college season was the final one for COVID-19 seniors to utilize their extra eligibility.
Shough is an intriguing prospect in a quarterback draft class that is not as hyped up as last year’s. 2024 saw six quarterbacks taken in the first round.
What Shough brings, along with Ward and Sanders, is the leadership and experience of navigating the portal that has enabled him to get to where he is today.
Much like Sanders, Shough is a durable pocket passer with a cannon of an arm, along with precision, and great touch on the ball.
Shough already knows that in the NFL, it’s not just about power, but it’s about accuracy and movement on his throws.
He does, however, lack the pure mobility of a Jalen Milroe or a Ward, but he is durable enough to last in a 17-game season and roll out of the pocket when pressure’s breaking down.
Shough had a workout with the New York Giants on April 19, as they are showing interest in the Louisville quarterback.
The New Orleans Saints, the LA Rams, as well as other teams, have also shown interest in the talented athlete.
Tyler Shough can be compared to current Rams quarterback, Matthew Stafford, in that he’s older for his position, but he has a big arm and is mobile from side to side.
The good news is that teams like the LA Rams or the New York Giants, who don’t need to select a quarterback right now, can opt for the best player available and then attempt to trade up in the second round to draft Shough.
Shough is projected as a developmental quarterback who could benefit from sitting and waiting for a veteran backup, then become the guy when his number is eventually called.
Attention, everyone of all ages. Welcome to the 2025 NFL Draft. The draft has everything from Cam Ward to the next Sanders boy and even a little Milroe in the mix.
The question is, which team is ready to take the ‘Big Shough’ in either the second or third round?
