Roman Anthony is emerging as a breakout star for the Boston Red Sox after his strong debut in the 2026 World Baseball Classic (WBC).

Anthony Shines for Team USA at WBC

As the youngest player on Team USA (21 years old), Anthony’s powerful left-handed swing left its mark in Miami at the WBC. Anthony’s majestic fourth-inning blast against tournament favorite Dominican Republic in the semifinal round was his second of the tournament and proved to be the game-winner. He was seamlessly inserted into a veteran Team USA lineup (team leading 7 RBI) that included the likes of Aaron Judge, Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber, and Cal Raleigh. Despite Team USA’s offense going silent in the championship against Venezuela on Monday night, Anthony returns to Boston with even more hype and promise of what his raw talent could mean to a Red Sox organization desperate for its next superstar.

Can Roman Anthony Replace Mookie Betts?

The Red Sox have teetered on the brink of irrelevance since winning the 2018 World Series behind a 29-year-old superstar named Mookie Betts. The sure-fire future Hall of Famer would only spend one more season in a Boston uniform, and Red Sox fans have been forced to watch one of their home-grown talents win three more World Series titles for the Dodgers. Anthony made his highly anticipated Red Sox debut last June and never left the lineup until an oblique injury abruptly ended his season on September 2. Although a small sample size, he had Red Sox Nation’s full attention after a torrid August that saw him hit over .300 with 4 doubles and 13 RBI, while clearing the fences six times. Roman Anthony becomes the headliner in Boston this season on top of a solid undercard filled with a good mix of youth and veteran leadership for head coach Alex Cora.

Boston’s Future Hinges on Young Talent

Once a major player in the MLB arms race with one of the highest payrolls in the league, the Red Sox are now the third biggest spender in their own division (AL East) with a taxable payroll of just over $255 million. Division rivals New York Yankees ($325 million plus) and Toronto Blue Jays ($305 million plus) have widened the gap between them and Boston in the resources they are willing to commit to being a contender. With Red Sox Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow yet to name an official General Manager for a third consecutive season, the organization is banking on prize prospects like Anthony, Marcelo Mayer, Kristian Campbell, along with flame thrower Payton Tolle to hit.

End of Roman Anthony Rant

The cavernous void in the Red Sox organization left by the Betts trade has been impossible to fill for the last seven years. In just 71 career games in a Boston uniform, Anthony has filled that void with the promise of the future. Red Sox Nation is rabid for the next superstar to emerge and take the city by storm. His name is Roman Anthony, and he’s no longer a secret.
