Some national soccer teams have golden eras. England had theirs when they won the World Cup, as did France when they lifted their first World Cup trophy and then followed that up with victory at the European Championship. The Spanish soccer team’s golden era was from 2008 to 2012.
Before the golden era, Spain had plenty of great players, but had not gone beyond the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup. Stars such as Raul scored plenty of goals for it, but Spain’s team did not have the consistency of the German and Italian national teams that usually make it to the semi-finals of the Euros or the World Cup.
Spain went on to win Euro 2008 with an exciting generation of players. Among them, Fernando Torres, David Villa, Andres Iniesta, Cesc Fabregas, and Xavi were a few who inspired the team to glory. Germany was defeated in the final, and the Spanish lifted the European Championship for the second time.
However, the World Cup remained elusive. Spain travelled to South Africa to win the World Cup for the first time. Whilst the team did not score a huge number of goals, they kept plenty of clean sheets in the finals. Combined with Villa’s goal-scoring exploits, this ensured them a place in the FIFA World Cup final for the first time. In that game, they faced Holland, and a goal in extra time was enough to ensure Spanish victory.
At Euro 2012, Spain was once again the favorites. The world and European champions defeated the Irish and Croatia to clinch their place in the quarter-finals. A convincing 2-0 victory against France was followed by a win against Portugal, albeit with a penalty shoot-out after a 0-0 draw.
In the final, the Italians were the team to beat. By halftime, Spain was up 2-0 and heading for victory. In the final 10 minutes, it scored two more goals to ensure a 4-0 victory. It was a record victory in the final that eclipsed West Germany’s previous record. Spain was also the first team to have won the World Cup and its continental championship three times in a row.
Spain’s impressive triumph in Euro 2024 has convinced many that it might start to dominate international soccer in the way they did from 2008 to 2012. The Spanish scored a record 15 goals in Euro 2024, which included 4-1 and 3-1 victories against Croatia and Georgia. They also won all seven of their matches in Euro 2024.
There can be little doubt that Spain is the best team in Europe as it is currently second in the FIFA World Rankings, just behind Argentina. Although Spain doesn’t play the Tiki-taka style anymore, it uses a great short-passing attack that retains ball possession very well.
Luis De la Fuente has implemented a more direct, vertical playing style, with possession used to more devastating effect at Euro 2024. This more direct short-passing game could be the catalyst for further glory in the next World Cup, which Spain is the favorite to win.
Spain also has Lamine Yamal, who is one of the most exciting rising stars in soccer, hailed by some to be the new Messi. This tricky winger is already a key player for Barcelona and Spain at 17 years and could inspire Spain to notable glory in the future.
The future could indeed be very bright for Spanish soccer, as it was when it lifted the European Championship in 2008. Spain’s golden generation from 2008 to 2012 set the benchmark for other teams to emulate. This current side has already shown itself to be among the best in Spain’s history and will certainly be one of the teams to watch in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
