The Boston Red Sox lost 16-1 to the New York Yankees on Sunday afternoon inside Yankee Stadium. Roman Anthony and Trevor Story both made their returns to action since May 4th and May 11th, respectively. Despite good performances from the duo, it couldn’t prevent the blowout. The Yankees continued to pour it on late, scoring nine of their runs in the eighth inning.
Despite both teams notching a pair of baserunners in the first inning, neither team scored. Will Warren kept the Red Sox to three baserunners through five innings, whereas Ranger Suarez, despite allowing five of his own, still kept the Yankees scoreless.
Yankees second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. lined a ball to center field, where Ceddanne Rafaela dove to make the catch. First-base umpire Edwin Moscoso ruled that it hit the ground, which was upheld after replay review.
Two batters later, the floodgates opened. Paul Goldschmidt drove in a pair of runs with a single up the middle. After a Cody Bellinger single, Heliot Ramos crushed a 1-2 breaking ball into the left field stands for a three-run homer, his 10th on the year.
A single from Jose Caballero in the sixth inning marked the end of the day for Ranger Suarez. His final line: 5.1 IP, nine hits, six earned runs, two walks and two strikeouts. Greg Weissert came in to pitch for Boston. Two batters later, Austin Wells knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly to center field to make it 6-0 before getting the final out of the sixth. Jovani Moran wound up taking the mound in the seventh inning.
Amed Rosario drove in a run with an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to make it 7-0. Nick Sogard then knocked in the sole Red Sox run with an RBI single of his own. The Yankees decided to pour it on in the eighth inning. With Moran on the mound for his second inning of work, Austin Wells hit a two-run bomb to left field. Goldschmidt followed that by going opposite field for back-to-back home runs to make it 10-1.
Two batters later, Moran was taken out and replaced by second baseman Andruw Monasterio. After walking the first two batters, Trent Grisham hit a sacrifice fly to make it 11-1, before Caballero came up next and hit a three-run tank. After Monasterio’s third walk of the inning, Wells came up and hit home run number two of the game, getting the game to its eventual final score.
Anthony went 2-for-4 with a double, while Story went 2-for-3 with a double and a strikeout, combining for four of the team’s seven hits this game. Overall, a successful comeback for both players this game, especially Story, who only had a .171 batting average in 10 contests in Triple-A Worcester. Good to see them catching back up with the rest of the team. It gives fans hope that they can return to the versions of themselves that they were last year.
Despite their efforts, a big reason why the Red Sox lost 16-1 was their lack of production throughout the rest of the lineup. Outside of the aforementioned pair, along with Sogard and Wilyer Abreu, everyone else failed to get on base in any capacity. Rafaela, Willson Contreras, Caleb Durbin and Jarren Duran combined to go 0-for-13 with three strikeouts.
Anthony and Story provided some promising performances in their first game back. The offense will need to step up if they want to remain in the playoff picture. The Red Sox start a new series on Monday as they head back to Beantown to take on the Seattle Mariners in a three-game series. The Yankees will head out to the West Coast to take on the Los Angeles Angels in a three-game series.
