Vancouver Canucks Defenseman pulled himself from the Four Nations Tournament due to a lingering injury. Quinn Hughes was to miss the tournament and the chance to play alongside his New Jersey Devils brother, Jack Hughes. However, things have changed, and Hughes is meeting the team in Boston as an injury replacement.
The USA Hockey Team has had an impressive start to the tournament. They secured their place in the final match by winning in regulation in the first two games. They are the only team to win twice in regulation and not overtime. They lost one game on Monday, February 17th, to Sweden.
Team USA has been playing through some injuries but still holding its own on the ice. Injuries have affected Matthew Tkachuk, Charlie McAvoy, Vincent Trochek, Brady Tkachuk, and Auston Matthews. It is not yet released who will make the appearance back for the final game. It is assumed that the majority of them will be dressed and game-ready.
Charlie McAvoy was admitted to the Massachusetts General Hospital for tests regarding an upper-body injury. He is set to miss the final game of the Four Nations Tournament. This injury was sustained during a game during the tournament and is now being evaluated by the Bruins team doctor.
Vincent Trochek was seen dealing with a potential hand injury. He played almost two minutes during the third period, for a total of 10:48 for the entire game. It has not been released whether he will play on Thursday.
On Monday, Brady Tkachuk sustained a lower-body injury in the first period against Sweden. At 5:12 in the first period, Tkachuk crashed into the Sweden goaltender’s leg, causing the net to dislodge. He completed one more shift, which lasted 10 seconds, before finding his way down the tunnel. He played a few more shifts in the second but left the ice and did not return for the third.
Matthew Tkachuk is set to return on Thursday. He missed most of the third period on Saturday when the USA played Canada for the first time. In a recent interview, he stated that he is ready to make his return on Thursday. Auston Matthews has been reported to be dealing with an upper-body issue; he missed Monday’s game against Sweden.
The Vancouver Defenseman was listed as a backup for Defenseman Charlie McAvoy. Due to McAvoy being out and evaluated, Quinn Hughes will make the trek to Boston before the final game. He is the perfect reinforcement for Team USA going into this game. He will bring a fresh set of skills to the team and the needed energy.
Hughes was one of the original six players to be named on the USA roster back in June. It was devastating to hear that he would not make it to the lineup. His return comes at a crucial time as the USA team takes on Canada for the title of the best.
USA and Canada will face off for the second time in the final game of this tournament. Team USA had pulled out the 3-1 win against Canada on Saturday, February 15th. The final game will be played in Boston at the TD Garden. The team treats this upcoming game as game seven of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
