It’s official: Adam Thielen has left the Carolina Panthers. Carolina traded the veteran wide receiver back to the Minnesota Vikings, sparking mixed reviews among fans of both teams. It seems like an excellent move for Minnesota, which is looking for a veteran WR who’s familiar with the team. While it seems like the move will leave the Panthers floundering, the trade might have been for the best, even if it means more growing pains.
Thielen played almost 75 percent of his snaps as a primary WR during last season. He was the dominant player and voice on the field, and his position made him a major player in all things Panthers. A team struggling to find its way to success can’t have a veteran player like Thielen on the bench. This move will allow younger receivers to fill the position, with General Manager Dan Morgan already announcing that Jalen Coker will be taking over the role. It’s the perfect trade for him, after playing the role during Thielen’s injury.
This move could also allow the reunion of another young WR with the team. Hunter Renfrow was cut loose on cutdown day. Morgan hasn’t made any promises, but says it is a possibility that he could make a comeback.
The success that the Panthers were able to celebrate at the end of the 2024 season is mainly due to the return of Thielen. He consistently scored with quarterback Bryce Young, and it’s possible that without Thielen, the team will struggle again. While the team is celebrating the move to rely on younger talent, that also means that all hope for the future rests on their shoulders. That’s a lot of weight to put on rookies and players who have just been on the field for a few years. If any success is going to come from this trade, then players like Tetairoa McMillan, Xavier Legette, Coker, and Jimmy Horn Jr. must deliver.
McMillan and Legette will be the two who truly have to prove themselves. Legette was outplayed by other WRs last year and will need to step up to be a leader in the locker room. McMillan will have to prove that he’s a superstar alongside Young and that his addition to the team was worthwhile.
The one thing Panthers fans can do better than any other NFL team is look ahead to a brighter future, and that’s what part of this trade looks like. While the Vikings acquired Thielen, Carolina obtained draft picks that could help them expand their roster in the future. That includes a 2026 fifth-round pick and a 2027 fourth-round pick. The move also frees up money that the Panthers were spending to keep the WR on the roster. Minnesota is now the one on the hook for Theilens’ base salary of $6.25 million.
The winner in this trade wasn’t the Panthers or the Vikings: it was Thielen himself. He’s able to return home for what could very well be his last season in the NFL and hopefully end his career on a high note. While the move has had mixed reactions, Carolina was able to secure good value for a player who has admitted that he’s nearing the end of his career. He also helped Young get some of the confidence he needed last year after being sacked into submission. Hopefully, that leadership will translate into success even as he leaves.
