Young Texans Pass Rusher Has Proven To Be The Teams Most Underrated Player

After recording eight sacks through eight games in 2021, has Jonathan Greenard established himself as the Texans most underrated player?

Just The Facts

Houston Texans defensive end, Jonathan Greenard, poses a formidable threat as we approach the 2022-2023 season. Drafted 90th overall in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft, the Florida-native player is rated 82.9 overall following the 2021-2022 season. With two forced fumbles, eight sacks, and seven assists, Greenard could be in for a breakout year with the ever-developing defensive line of the Texans.

Sam Monson of Pro Football Focus ranks Jonathan Greenard as the most underrated player on the Texans…

Houston’s Roster is in such bad shape that it’s tough finding too many worthy candidates for an underrated list. You could argue Davis Mills at quarterback, but despite some flashes in his rookie season, he still finished with a 58.0 overall PFF grade and has more than enough supporters. Meanwhile, Greenard quietly put together a really nice season for the Texans in 2021. He recorded an 89.2 PFF pass-rushing grade, ranking seventh in the league among edge rushers on a much lower sample size than full-time starters. Greenard earned a bigger role going forward, which might generate him more recognition.

A Real Winning Lineup

Paired with the likes of edge-rusher Jerry Hughes, returning to his hometown in Houston, the struggling defensive line could show a noticeable spark in the upcoming season. The Texas-native defensive end ranked 37th in free agency before signing in May with the Texans. Hughes alongside Greenard has strong reason to improve the worst-rated defensive line in 2021-2022.

Hope For The Texans

Jonathan Greenard proves to be a standout player in the developing lineup of Houston. Head coach, Lovie Smith, recently gave praise to the star defensive candidate in an interview with Marc Vandermeer saying, “He will take another big step this year.” Few have benefitted from Smith’s arrival in Houston more than Greenard. When drafted out of Florida in 2020, he was expected to factor into the pass rush as a standing blitzer. The production was limited under then-coordinator Anthony Weaver as Greenard would only record one sack and 19 total tackles. Smith, who mainly runs a four-man pass rush, made the particular decision to move Greenard down the line of the scrimmage. He would go on to be Houston’s breakout player in an otherwise lackluster 2021 campaign, leading the Texans with eight sacks, nine tackles for loss and 12 quarterback hits. All signs point to yes for Greenard and the Texans defensive line.

Confidence Is Key

In a 4-13 season, fans look for the best in a rather lackluster season full of turmoil. Greenard’s eight sacks were one of the few bright spots in the uninspiring 2021-2022 season.

“Just playing relentless, just handling my job, reading my keys, beating my guy, just trying to make a play,” Greenard said at a recent charity event. “I mean overall, the defense, we’re all trying to make a play. I was just at the right place, right time, I think.”

Among the other accomplishments of the defensive prodigy, Greenard posted 12 quarterback hits last season which also led the team. The Texans and Greenard look to sustain types of stats like these and even improve on them.

Expectations Going Forward

Jonathan Greenard looks extremely hopeful and could even prove legendary in the upcoming season. If the edge-rusher keeps improving, we could be looking at Pro-Bowl-level talent for years to come. Texans fans and football connoisseurs should closely watch this outstanding football mind. In a rather dull-looking depth chart, spots of talent from Greenard should give every reason to pay attention to the masterful edge-rusher. Leading in categories such as tackles-for-loss and sacks, expect big improvements and hopeful moments from the most underrated player on the Texans.
