Would Middlesbrough Kickstart Their Turnaround With Premier League Legend

The Championship club sat in the bottom three, sacked manager Chris Wilder after his appointment nine months ago. Following a 1-0 loss to Coventry, the club board opted to relieve the English man of his role at the club with immediate effect.

“Middlesbrough Football Club has terminated the contract of manager Chris Wilder with immediate effect,” said a club statement.

Carrick emerged as one of the most highly-rated young coaches in the team’s scout list after his work with Manchester United. He is of English native, and his reputation has grown since he departed Manchester United as a player after leading the English giants to several titles in 15 years as a player and a coach – winning the five Premier League titles, the Champions League, the Europa League, two League Cups, and an FA Cup.

Michael Carrick Emerge As Middlesbrough Manager

Michael Carrick, who has been linked with several coaching jobs for a few weeks now, finally has the chance to implement his experience and tactical nous in the North Yorkshire team at the start of the coming week.

Speaking after his move to Middlesbrough was confirmed, Carrick said:

“Middlesbrough was the first professional club I played for as a nine-year old boy, so it’s a very special feeling to be back here as a head coach,”
“Growing up in the northeast myself I’m fully aware of what football means to people. It’s a real privilege for me to be in this position and to feel all the passion and enthusiasm you’ve got for the game and for Boro.”
“I’ll give everything to help develop the team and keep moving the club forward and make you the supporters proud. I can’t wait to get started.”

Middlesbrough has been struggling in the Championship as they find it impossible to capitalize on the seventh-placed finish in the last season.

They currently sit 21st in the standings after 16 games losing seven in the process. Their lackluster defense has conceded a fourth league-high 21 goals, and their attack has appeared short of confidence this season.

Before his departure, Carrick’s masterminded an uninspiring United team who lacked confidence following Ole Solskjear’s sack, to a 3-2 win against Arsenal at Old Trafford, a 2-0 win over Villarreal which secured their place in the last-16 of the Champions League and a 1-1 draw against an inform Chelsea.

The highlight of his managerial career at United wasn’t just his wins but his decisions to drop high-profile names within the squad to the bench.

Middlesbrough chairman Steve Gibson has expressed his excitement to have a person of Carrick’s caliber in charge at the Riverside Stadium.

“We’re delighted to welcome Michael to the club. We had identified a number of potentials for the vacancy who we spoke with, and were impressed by all. But Michael was the outstanding candidate. Michael has the same values as the club, and we are very much aligned in our ambitions. We see Michael as the perfect fit for us and he believes this is the right club at the right time.”

In Conclusion

This is Carrick’s first permanent managerial job, and the Riverside stadium faithful will hope he follows the footsteps of Manchester United legend Bryan Robson. The latter coached boro to three cup finals and promotion to England’s top flight.
