It is finally official. With the first overall pick in the 2024 National Football League draft, the Chicago Bears selected quarterback Caleb Williams out of USC. The 22-year-old from Washington D.C. is officially a Chicago Bear and is the third quarterback taken in the first round by Chicago since 2017 following Mitch Trubisky and Justin Fields. This marks a franchise-changing day for one of the NFL's oldest squads as the search for a long-term quarterback in the Windy City might end.
Caleb Williams Brings A Lot Of Talent And Excitement To Chicago
Caleb Williams has been outstanding for the USC Trojans since transferring from Oklahoma in 2022. The former Sooner threw for 4,537 yards, 42 touchdowns, and five interceptions in his first season in California. He nearly led his team to the College Football Playoff but finished with an 11-3 record.
In 2023, the Trojans finished 8-5 with Williams throwing for 3,333 yards and 30 touchdowns, which many considered a drop-off from the previous season. He still put up good numbers despite losing wide receiver Jordan Addison, who was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft. Now he will be taking his talents to Chicago, which has yet to have a 4,000-yard passer in franchise history.
Williams Looks To Fix The Bears Struggles At Quarterback
The Bears have struggled at the quarterback position in recent years. In 2019, Mitch Trubisky was the last passer to record over 3,000 yards and 24+ passing touchdowns. The team has not made the playoffs since 2020, when Trubisky led the team to an 8-8 finish and a wild-card loss to the New Orleans Saints.
The Bears' last division title was in 2018 when the team went 12-4 and won the NFC North. That was also the last time the Bears defeated their rival Green Bay Packers. While it has been some rough years in the Windy City, there is a lot of hope in Chicago. With two generational players entering the city within the last year, Williams and the Chicago Blackhawks' Connor Bedard of the NHL, it is an exciting time to be a sports fan in Chi-Town.
