Patriots Signing This Intriguing Star Make Them A Contender In 2023?

Updated: Jun 28, 2023

There is reportedly optimism between the Patriots and Deandre Hopkins that a deal can get done. How good will New England be if they can land the star receiver? After a horrid offensive year in 2022 finishing as a below average unit, the Patriots are making big changes. They got an offensive minded coordinator in Bill O'Brien, but arguably their biggest move is a move that has not happened yet.

Deandre Hopkins is as big a star receiver as they come. He has had six years with over 1,000 yards receiving and is one of the best route runners in the NFL. The Cardinals have had cap problems with Kyler Murray's extension kicking in, they had to cut the expensive veteran.

Potential Fit On The Patriots

Hopkins and New England have lots of mutual respect, and with a diminished market for his services New England is in a prime spot to land Hopkins. Reportedly, the only two teams in it for Hopkins at this point are the Titans and Patriots. New England offers a much better opportunity than the Titans.

New England already has a great number two receiver in JuJu, and good complementary receivers in Kendrick Bourne and Tyquan Thornton. The room is solid, and with a star every player is in their ideal role. Hopkins has worked with Bill O'Brien when he was considered the best wide receiver in the NFL. Hopkins has aged slightly, but in the right system he can be very productive.

The Patriots Must Make A Big Push

While the Titans need him too, getting him is crucial for New England. Mac Jones is still an unproven quarterback, and until New England can surround him with a good receiver room they will never know how good he is. Mac Jones threw for 3,800 yards in his rookie year with Jakobi Meyers as his best receiver.

Giving Mac an elite receiver like Hopkins would truly unlock Mac's ceiling, and give New England the firepower to compete. Other than the receiving core, New England has an elite defense and a very good running game. Deandre Hopkins would make New England a viable contender.
