Who Is Leading The 2023 NFL MVP Race So Far?
Can you believe that the 2023 NFL season is over halfway over? Players and teams have balled out, so it's time to start picking who might take home some of the more coveted awards at the end of the season. Let's start with Most Valuable Player. Here are several players that are in the running.
Patrick Mahomes
The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback is always in the running for most valuable player. He won the award last year and is looking to be the league MVP for the third time in his six years as a starting QB. So far in 2023, Mahomes has thrown for over 2,400 passing yards, 17 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. He has team at 7-2 and on their way to the top seed in the AFC. The former Texas Tech star is a special player who can continue make throws that nobody else can make despite a variety of defensive strategies the opposition tries to use.
Tua Tagovailoa
The Miami Dolphins quarterback leads the league in passing yards with 2,609 and touchdowns with 19. His team is 6-3, which is well within the playoff race, but not at the top. Miami struggled in their games against some of the top caliber teams including the Buffalo Bills, Philadelphia Eagles, and Kansas City Chiefs. If Tua can continue to dominate and add a couple signature wins this year, he still very well realistically take home the award.
Lamar Jackson
As long as Lamar Jackson and his Baltimore Ravens teammates can stay healthy, the sky is the limit for the team. Jackson has previously won the award in 2019, but he is almost playing at that level this year. In 2023, he has completed 71% of his passes for 1,954 yards, nine touchdowns, and just three interceptions. Jackson has shown the ability to run the ball with 440 rushing yards and five touchdowns on the ground. Baltimore is also 7-2, so the AFC will be very competitive.
Jalen Hurts
The only NFC player on the list has his team at 8-1 and the best record in the NFL. The Philadelphia Eagles QB was the runner-up for MVP last year, and narrowly lost the Super Bowl. After a slow start to the season and battling through knee issues, Hurts continues to prove his worth. In 2023, he has completed 69% of his passes for nearly 2,400 yards, 15 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. Hurts has also compiled 316 rushing yards and seven TDs on the ground. With just two losses in the past 22 games, the former Alabama/Oklahoma star has to win the award sometime.
Who Will Win NFL MVP?
There is still plenty of time left this year. Some teams still have nine games to go, which is more than half a season worth of action. Additionally, several players not listed may find themselves on the list in the coming weeks with stellar performances.
So far, Patrick Mahomes is the MVP. He's consistent week after week and has his team in a great spot.
