Where Does Ranger Suarez' Historic Performance Rank Among Phillies Greats?

The Philadelphia Phillies have been turning heads this season, and much of their success can be attributed to their stellar starting pitching. One name that has stood out so far is left-hander Ranger Suárez, who has been having an incredible season in 2024.

On a Saturday night matchup against the San Diego Padres, Suárez once again delivered a gem. He pitched eight innings, allowing just one run on three hits. His pinpoint control was evident as he walked none and struck out eight batters. With this performance, Suárez improved his season record to an impressive 5-0 with a 1.32 earned run average.

His Performance Puts Him In Phillies Record Books.

However, what truly sets Suárez apart is his historic scoreless innings streak. By not allowing a run until the eighth inning, he extended his streak to an impressive 32.0 innings. This achievement puts him in an elite class in Phillies history. Let’s take a look at the longest scoreless innings streaks by Phillies pitchers since 1893.

  1. Grover Alexander (1911): 41 innings

  2. Cliff Lee (2011): 34 innings

  3. Larry Andersen (1984): 32 2/3 innings

  4. Dick Farrell (1957-58): 32 2/3 innings

  5. Ranger Suárez (2024): 32 innings

  6. Robin Roberts (1950): 32 innings

  7. Ken Heintzelman (1949): 32 innings

Suárez’s consistency and dominance have been crucial for the Phillies. Alongside aces Zack Wheeler and Aaron Nola, he forms a formidable trio that could propel the team deep into the playoffs. The Phillies have tasted success in recent years, making it to the World Series in 2022 and the NLCS in 2023. If Suárez maintains his ace-like form, they might just add another chapter to their postseason journey.

The 28-year-old lefty has been impressive since his debut in 2018, accumulating a lifetime record of 34-21. His career ERA stands at 3.24, and this season, he has already struck out 40 batters in 41.0 innings.

Next up for the Phillies is a Sunday matchup against the Padres, followed by a series against the Angels. Philadelphia currently sits at 18-10 and second in the NL East behind the Atlanta Braves. They have picked up the pace since a slow start to the season by going 8-2 in their past ten games.
