What In The World Are The Detroit Lions Doing?
Updated: Jun 11, 2023
The Detroit Lions have had one rough week after four players were suspended for betting, and one of them was last year’s first-round pick, Jameson Williams. The Lions went into the first round of the NFL Draft on Thursday night with two first-round picks, and they found a way to disappoint.
What Did The Lions Do?
The Lion’s first pick came at number 12 overall, and they selected running back Jahmyr Gibbs from Alabama. The same team who has D’Andre Swift and just signed David Montgomery decided it was a good idea to select another one at pick 12.
Running back at pick 12 isn’t a great position to pick in the first place, but selecting one when you already have two quality backs makes no sense.
Swift is now being talked about in trade talks but running backs have hardly any value on the trade market.
Gibbs could be a solid player, but the Lions are not a running back away from being a legit Super Bowl team, and they have some serious holes they need to fill.
The Lions also decided it was time for them to draft Jack Campbell, a linebacker from Iowa with the 18th pick. A lot of draft sites had Campbell as a day-two pick, and NFL.com labeled him as an average starter.
Final Thoughts
A linebacker is like running back, and position value is not great unless you’re drafting a freak in the first few picks.
Adding a running back and linebacker won’t make that much of an impact on the Lions this season, and they are going to need to have a better day two or Detroit might not be going places that they thought they would in 2023.
