Week Two Awards For The Eagles
In Week Two, the Philadelphia Eagles (2-0) defeated the Minnesota Vikings (1-1) on Monday Night Football. The offense took care of the first half while the defense finished things off in the second half. This was another great team win with some awards to go around.
The awards are Most Valuable Player, Offensive Player of the Game, Defensive Player of the Game, Special Teams Player of the Game, and Rookie of the Game. A player can get two or more awards and may repeat as many times as needed.
Most Valuable Player- Jalen Hurts
We will save Offensive Player of the Week for another player, but Jalen Hurts was definitely showing out on Monday night. His development was on full display with tight-window throws, the right reads, and keeping his eyes downfield. He was spreading the ball around and four pass catchers ended up with 69+ yards at the end of the game. Hurts threw a 53-yard touchdown to Quez Watkins on a read he missed just earlier this year against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. A well-deserved MVP this week for Hurts in his best game as a professional yet.
Jalen Hurts’ stat line: 25/31, 333 passing yards, one touchdown, one interception. 11 carries, 57 yards, and two touchdowns.
Offensive Player Of The Game- DeVonta Smith
After receiving zero catches in Week One, Devonta Smith arrived in Week Two. Hurts hit Smith on the first play of the game and that set the tone. Smith caught eight passes and three resulted in big first downs. Smith had back-to-back 16+ yard gains which later set up Hurts for a rushing touchdown. Great bounce-back week for Smith
Devonta Smith’s stat line: seven targets, seven catches, 80 yards, 11.4 yards per catch.
Defensive Player Of The Game- Darius Slay
This can’t go to anyone else. Darius Slay nearly won this week’s MVP award. Justin Jefferson is arguably the best wide receiver in football and Slay made him a complete non-factor. When lined up with Jefferson, Slay was targetted six times, one catch allowed, and two interceptions. Kirk Cousins’ passer rating was 0.0 when throwing to Jefferson when guarded by Slay, according to Pro Football Focus. Slay should be winning the NFC defensive player of the week as well.
Darius Slay’s stat line- One tackle, two interceptions, five passes defended, and 19 yards allowed.
Special Teams Player Of The Game- Arryn Siposs
Arryn Siposs was called upon four times on Monday night and punted for a total of 179 yards for a 44.8 average. Along with pinning the Vikings inside the 20 yard-line twice, Siposs made one of the biggest plays of the game. After a blocked kick, Siposs tracked down the Vikings’ returner and made the tackle. This eventually resulted in an Avonte Maddox interception instead of a Vikings’ touchdown. Great effort by the Punter.
Rookie Of The Game- Britain Covey
No other rookie has recorded stats, so Covey wins this one by default. However, he has down a good job for what he is given on his punt return duties. The Eagles’ return teams have some bad blocking and that needs to improve. Covey has a good eye for the fair catch and when to call his own number.
