Week 6 Preview: Cowboys Vs Eagles

A battle for first place. Cowboys vs Eagles. As a fan, this is what you live for. As an Eagles fan, this matchup means even more. This is the chance for the Eagles to show why they are the premier team in the NFC. The offensive line is healthy, the defense is rolling and the offense has shown many ways to get the job done so far. Here is everything that you need to know for the Week Six Cowboys vs Eagles matchup.

Battle Of The Trenches

Both teams’ strengths lie in the trenches. The Eagles have one of the best offensive lines, and the Cowboys have one of the best defensive lines. Dallas is giving up just 14.4 points per game, and the Eagles are scoring 27. The early success stems on the defensive and offensive lines respectively.

After missing Jordan Mialata this past week against Arizona, the Eagles have a fully healthy offensive line. Dallas will move Demarcus Lawrence all over the line and get pressure with Micah Parsons as well. With a healthy offensive line the Eagles offense will look a lot different than Week Five. Jalen Hurts won’t be under pressure as much and the playbook will be expanded like earlier in the season. There won’t be as many quick screens trying to cover any offensive line deficiencies.

On the other hand, the Eagles will have to make Cooper Rush’s life extremely difficult. Rush isn’t the most mobile quarterback and hasn’t had a single game where he threw for 250 or more passing yards. Should the Eagles’ offense put up points early, Dallas will have to become one dimensional, which will play to the Eagles’ advantage.

Scheming Against Trevon Diggs

In 2021, Cowboys’ corner Trevon Diggs had a breakout season and established himself as one of the premier corners in the NFL. There was still room to grow and he made the necessary adjustments to his game early on. Last season he was exclusively on the outside and this season he’s played snaps in the slot, in the defensive box ( The Front-7), and even a snap on the defensive line. Expect A.J. Brown to be the primary focus for Diggs this evening. Shane Steichen will have to scheme opportunities for him. Whether it is screens, quick routes, or touches in the backfield, Brown has to have more of a role than in Arizona. If and when Diggs shadows A.J. Brown, it will be another Devonta Smith game.

Jalen Hurts

You can’t talk about a Cowboys vs Eagles matchup without mentioning Jalen Hurts. In his two starts against the Cowboys, Hurts is 0-2 with three touchdowns and four interceptions. This week is another benchmark for Hurts in showing why he is the franchise guy. He is going to have to play his most complete game of the season to beat Dallas. Dallas has a stout defensive line, elite linebackers, and an elite cornerback. Dallas has the pieces to make things a real test. The offense will have to run through Hurts more than normal. Whether it is the use of RPOs to freeze the defensive ends; open running lanes later in the game or play action to keep the safeties honest; creating big play opportunities, the offense will have to be creative and consistent. This is a big test going into the Bye-Week and as long as Jalen Hurts plays his game, they will pass the test.
