This Veteran QB Could Revive His Career With Steelers
Who will be the Steelers starting Quarterback in 2024? Nobody knows at this point. According to the app formerly known as Twitter, the Steelers will roll into Training Camp at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe with a quarterback battle between Kenny Pickett, Mason Rudolph, Kirk Cousins, Justin Fields, Russell Wilson, and Bo Nix.
This is weird territory for Steelers fans. Having Ben Roethlisberger at the helm for 18 years made everything easier, but the Steelers are now finding the rocky road of finding a franchise quarterback, something teams can spend decades doing. The Steelers will have plenty of options this offseason, through free agency, trades, and the draft in April.
One of the names that stands out is Russell Wilson. The former Seahawks and Broncos quarterback will be looking for a new home in the next couple of months after listing his Colorado mansion for sale. Could Pittsburgh be a good fit?
Are The Steelers A Good Fit For Russ?
Wilson has a stigma that follows him, which is undeniable. Many people don’t like his antics and the way he carries himself, but the bottom line is the guy can play quarterback. He got somewhat scapegoated in Denver after not being the guy Sean Payton wanted. Wilson certainly had a better season than the one before, but still not good enough to stick around in Denver.
Looking at things from a broad perspective, it feels like the Steelers would be a good fit for Wilson. The weapons in Pittsburgh are massively better than what he had in Denver. George Pickens and Diontae Johnson are better than Courtland Sutton and Jerry Jeudy, easily. Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren both trump Javonte Williams, and Pat Freiermuth could be an instant match with Wilson. On paper, it feels really good.
Last season with Sutton and Jeudy leading the receiver room, Wilson was able to complete 66.4 percent of his passes for 3,070 yards with 26 touchdowns and eight interceptions. Not a bad stat line. Wilson was also sacked 45 times and averaged 204.7 passing yards a game. Wilson also commanded four game-winning drives on the season, something Steelers fans would love.
Wilson’s Pedigree Could Be Enticing For Steelers
Wilson has appeared in 16 career playoff games and has a Super Bowl ring to his name. He’s a winner. Mike Tomlin and the Steelers should love that. Wilson is a nine-time Pro Bowler, the 2020 Walter Payton Man of the Year, and as mentioned before, a Super Bowl XLVIII Champion. All of the success may have come in his 10 years in Seattle, but to be fair to Wilson didn’t seem like he got a good shake in his two years in Denver, besides the money he made.
Is The Juice Worth The Squeeze?
Wilson can be corny at times—the Mr. Unlimited video, the Subway commercials, all the things that Marshawn Lynch and Richard Sherman have said about him, all of it is a bit corny. But the Steelers shouldn’t let that stop them from bringing in a guy with good football left in him. Wilson could not only be a great starter for the Steelers, but he could also be huge in the future development of Kenny Pickett if that even matters anymore.
If Wilson comes at the right price, this is a no-brainer for the Steelers. With the defense that Pittsburgh has that will be returning all its starters and will more than likely be getting some new pieces thanks to Omar Khan, the goal should be to win now. There are no days left to waste in the TJ Watt era for Pittsburgh. Wilson could be a huge addition to the Steelers if they decide to kick the tires. But don’t forget to be careful, Steelers fans. It’s spicy!
