This Special Trait of Chiefs QB Sets Him Apart

Patrick Mahomes and his dominance for the Chiefs on the field is no secret. What makes him truly special, however, is another facet of his game that isn’t talked about enough.

The Kansas City Chiefs are eternally grateful for Patrick Mahomes and what he’s done for the franchise in just four short years as starting quarterback. Mahomes has changed the city and team in a historic magnitude since becoming a member of the Chiefs. It’s impossible to understate his value and importance to the city, franchise, and NFL.

However, there’s an underrated side of Mahomes and his game that isn’t talked about enough in the media. Sure, he’s on pace to become one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever take the field. Through his first four seasons as a starter, no one has more passing yards or passing touchdowns than Mahomes. The sky is the limit and he’s already reaching historic heights in just his fifth season in the league.

So what is it about Mahomes that truly sets him apart?

Chiefs QB Is A Special Player, But Even More Special Off The Field

It isn’t news to anyone that Mahomes is an elite player on the football field on pace for historic levels of dominance. As great of a player, as he’s been, it doesn’t make him entirely different from the likes of Aaron Rodgers or Tom Brady. Instead, what sets Mahomes apart is his incredible commitment to the community, both in Kansas City and in his home state of Texas.

Mahomes established the “15 and the Mahomies” Foundation in 2019. According to the Foundation’s website, they’ve provided 136,000 meals and $2.5 million in charitable grants in just the two years since the foundation was founded. The community reach by Mahomes and his foundation has been staggering, to say the least. Below are some highlights of the quarterback’s last few years:

  1. In the first-ever 15 and the Mahomies Foundation gala, the organization raised “more than $600,000” to further “improve lives of children.”

  2. In 2019, Mahomes and his brother, Jackson, worked alongside the foundation to donate shoes to students in need at Patrick’s high-school alma-mater in Texas.

  3. Mahomes was named an ambassador for the NFL’s London Academy. According to the NFL’s website, “The NFL Academy, which opened in September 2019, is a major initiative by the NFL, which aims to use American football to create life-changing opportunities for young people all around the world.”

  4. In March of 2021, the 15 and the Mahomes Foundation worked alongside the Black College Football Hall of Fame. In a piece written by Charles Goldman of USA Today, he outlines some of the Foundation’s work. Goldman writes: “Mahomes and his foundation backed their Road to Equality event just this past season, but now they’ll turn their attention and support their newest venture, the HBCU Legacy Bowl. This recently announced postseason college football All-Star game will give the best players and coaches from Historically Black Colleges and Universities an opportunity for exposure with NFL teams and within the greater sport.”

  5. An article outlining Mahomes and his work in the Kansas City area discusses how Mahomes and his foundation donated $1 million towards a new KC Parks playground at Martin Luther King Jr. Park.

Clearly, there is no shortage of incredible community involvement from Mahomes and his Foundation. His performance on the field is outstanding but his outreach in the community is what truly sets him apart as a one-of-a-kind figure in the Kansas City community.
