This Lions Wide Receiver Is Being Overhyped So Far In Preseason

Is this Lions wide receiver receiving too much hype so far in the preseason? Some fans seem to expect him to be the next big receiver for Detroit, but the hype is far too excessive so far.

Training camp and preseason allow the opportunity for Lions players who are a question mark to make the roster a chance to shine and prove themselves. Sometimes the players that shine turn out to be really solid players in the NFL, other times they just end up being solid depth pieces and making the final 53-man roster. Every year, every team has at least one preseason stand-out, and naturally as fans do they tend to over-hype him. So let’s break down if Lions fans are giving Tom Kennedy too much hype or not.

Where Is The Hype Coming From For This Lions Wide Receiver?

Throughout training camp so far Tom Kennedy has made some big plays and shown flashes. While he hasn’t been extremely consistent in practice his big play ability has shown enough to put him in contention for a roster spot. He has also been the number one target for quarterbacks David Blough and Tim Boyle throughout scrimmages in training camp. His chemistry with the team has been pretty good, being one of the longer-tenured players on the Lions. But even with good chemistry, he hasn’t been very good throughout his tenure.

Along with showing out in training camp, Kennedy has also shown out in both of the Lions’ preseason games. In game one of the preseason, Kennedy put up more yards than any receiver in the entire NFL, putting up eight receptions for 104 yards. He continued this production in game two, scoring two improbable touchdowns. He has also been noticed by people outside the Lions fan base including being recognized by Chad Johnson.

Tom Kennedy is in a tight race with many receivers on the Lions roster for a spot on the 53-man roster. Lions fans don’t really know how to react to this because we have rarely had the problem where we have too much talent to not keep on the roster. So fans hyping him up like he’s the next big thing is no surprise. However, it’s tough to jump the gun when you take into account that he plays with and against the second and third-string players, so calling him a starter is a bit much.

Are Lions Fans Hyping Tom Kennedy Up Too Much?

The hype for Tom Kennedy may be warranted but not to the extent that Lions fans are bringing it to. Kennedy played 12 games for the Lions last year, coming on and off the practice squad, and only put up six total receptions for 54 yards all season. He also had one passing touchdown last year on a trick play, but you can’t really use that as an argument for him to be a quality player for this team. Lions fans seem to believe that he can become an elite receiver in this league but that is extremely unlikely.

With that said, Kennedy definitely deserves some credit for what he’s done this offseason and preseason. The reality of it is that Kennedy is 26 already and has struggled to play in the NFL, nevertheless staying on a team. Even though he’s shown out you can only have so many players on the roster.

Last year to start the season the Lions only kept five wide receivers on the roster, and it’s hard to say you’d take Kennedy over DJ Chark, Amon Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, Quintez Cephus, Khalif Raymond, and Trinity Benson. So he’d definitely be someone good to keep on the practice squad in case of an injury, but to justify him making the final roster or even being a starter in some fans’ cases is a little bit too much hype for him.
