This Is The Best QB On The Patriots, Debate Over

The clear winner of the Patriot’s recent QB controversy.

GG. Greg Gumbel. Gilbert Gottfried. Giovani Giorgio. Gillette Gazette. The initials GG are almost exclusively synonymous with that of greatness. Curiously enough, there is another man with the initials G.G. who’s seemingly been overlooked and counted out, before even being given a chance.

Nowadays everybody wanna talk like they got something to say, but nothing comes out. When they move their lips, just a bunch of gibberish, and other people act like they forgot about Garrett Gilbert. A Philosopher, Probably

Garrett Gilbert

Surely you’ve heard of him? He’s quite possibly the best 3rd-string QB in the entire storied history of the National Football League. … What do you mean he’s not? … What do you mean, “Who is Garrett Gilbert?”. What do you mean “Sir, this is a Wendy’s, please order something or leave?”.

Well, ladies and/or gentlemen, please settle down, and put your torches and pitchforks away for the time being, while I explain to you now, that, this is a story all about how, my life got flipped turned upside down, and I’d like to take a minute, just sit right there, I’ll tell you all about Patriots 3rd-String QB, Garrett Gilbert.

Garrett Gilbert was a sixth-round draft pick of the St. Louis Rams in 2014. He’s bounced around the league as a backup and practice squad guy pretty consistently since then, including a couple of earlier stints with the Patriots, which includes from 2014-2015 when he would win his lone Super Bowl ring.

Him winning a Super Bowl ring with the Patriots is actually a beautiful story in itself, as Gilbert’s father Gale, was another backup QB in his heydey, who went down as the only player in NFL history to play in five consecutive Super Bowls, but somehow didn’t win any of them. It’s safe to say Gilbert redeemed the family legacy by winning his ring with the Patriots, and perhaps his story arc is already complete…

However, Garrett Gilbert was never truly given a chance to lead an NFL football team. It’s a damn shame too, as he’s managed to be a standout player anytime he was given the reigns to lead a team whilst in high school, college, or even more recently in 2019 when he was starting QB for the Orlando Apollos and basically the best QB in the now defunct Alliance of American Football before it folded eight weeks into their planned ten-week regular season. Gilbert and the rest of the Orlando Apollos, along with Head Coach Steve Spurrier were awarded the title of honorary champions, with a record of 7-1 at the time of the league’s disbandment.

If you double the stats he recorded through eight games to account for 16 games which is close enough to an NFL regular season, you would get a stat line of:

314 completions on 518 passing attempts, 4304 passing yards, 26 passing TDs, six interceptions, 48 rushing Attempts for 158 Rushing Yards, and two rushing TDs.

That’s not bad at all! That’s a completely serviceable stat line for an NFL QB. Granted he was playing at a lower level in what was essentially minor-league football, but still, with these types of numbers, it’s obvious Garrett Gilbert is at least a somewhat decent quarterback.

His collegiate career was decent enough, with a few tough years at the University of Texas where he would lose his starting job after an uninspiring sophomore campaign and ensuing disappointing junior year where he would receive shoulder surgery and be forced out for the remainder of the season after only two games.

He’d transfer to Southern Methodist University the following year and put up decent numbers during both years with the team, while setting a multitude of school records in the process, including Most Passing Yards in a Game (538) and Most Touchdowns in a Game (7).

Best QB In The Nation

If you go back even earlier to his High School football career, you might be surprised like I was to learn that Garrett Gilbert was considered one of the best High School football players of all time, and was even quoted by coach Jackie Sherrill as being the best quarterback he’s seen since Dan Marino.

Garrett was so good in fact, that he would win the most coveted High School sporting award in the country the “Gatorade Male Athlete of the Year Award” following his 2008 season when he led Lake Travis High School to a perfect 16-0 record and a second straight State Championship. He finished that year with 4,851 passing yards and 55 TDs. He was even invited to the infamous elite-11 event after High School, where the 11 best QBs in the country compete and are thoroughly evaluated by the football world.

Everything pointed to Garrett Gilbert eventually becoming one of the greatest QBs of all time, coming out of High School. He was probably the most famous person in Texas not too long ago between the years of 2008 and 2009. What could’ve become of old Double-G had he been given a proper chance at the NFL level? He’s played a handful of games in his backup role over the years but was never really given a chance to lead a team at the highest level.

Most of the time, when Garrett Gilbert was the leader of a football team, they unsurprisingly went on to achieve a high level of success. Maybe it’s time Garrett Gilbert gets one last chance to ride into the sunset and one more chance to win another ring for his old man in the continuation of a family legacy redemption arc that nobody could possibly root against.

Today the narrative is all about whether to start Mac Jones or Bailey Zappe in the coming weeks during this 2022 NFL regular season. But maybe the answer lies somewhere else. Ladies and gentlemen, hop on the Garrett Gilbert train and get ready for the ride of your life. Best of luck to Jones and Zappe, but Gilbert is the unquestioned man for the job, and if you’re not on team Gilbert, don’t talk to me.

Go Pats!
