These Patriots Are Going To Make A Big Leap In 2023
Updated: Jun 28, 2023
After naming Matt Patricia the offensive coordinator last season, the New England Patriots had an expected regression on offense. They were in the bottom tier of teams in scoring and passing yardage. Mac Jones also regressed which was disappointing. With Bill O’Brien as the new offensive coordinator now, there are players poised to break out this season, let’s discuss.
Tyquan Thornton
The Patriots selected the speedy Tyquan Thornton in last year’s NFL draft. New England invested a second-round pick in him, so clearly they saw raw potential. Tyquan is a 6’2 receiver who runs a 4.3 40-yard dash. The Patriots desperately need speed so Tyquan was a great pick.
However, with Mac Jones missing multiple games and Matt Patricia being the offensive coordinator, Tyquan didn’t have a great rookie year. He finished 2022 with only 247 yards. With another off-season, OTAs, more experience, and a likely more effective Mac Jones, Tyquan will have a much better opportunity this year.
Tyquan Thornton is extremely fast so his ability is a massive need. With the addition of Bill O’Brien, Mac should see production similar to his rookie year when he had close to 4,000 yards passing and 22 touchdowns. Mac should leap, and along with him, Tyquan Thornton should have a breakout year in 2023 becoming the playmaker New England has needed for years now.
Mike Gesicki
Mike Gesicki has been a talented receiving option for years, but he’s constantly been underutilized in the schemes he’s been in. Mike Gesicki broke out in 2020 with 703 yards. In 2021 Gesicki had 73 receptions for 780 yards. In 2022, the Dolphins acquired Tyreek Hill and head coach Mike McDaniel chose to focus his offense more on the likes of Jaylen Waddle and Tyreek Hill.
Throughout his career, Mike Gesicki hasn’t had consistent quarterback play and his best production has come with a struggling Tua. While he won’t be featured on the Patriots, they do have an efficient offense that spreads the ball around. With Bill O’Brien and Mac Jones hopefully leaping as a passer, Gesicki could get consistent targets and break out as a receiving option.
Bill O’Brien was the one who established the successful two-tight-end scheme for the Patriots, so Gesicki has a lot of upsides. Gesicki could be an under-the-radar player who breaks out this season.
