The Writers Of Niners Empire Predict Week One: 49ers vs. Bears

What do the writers of Niners Empire predict will happen in this Week One matchup between the San Francisco 49ers and the Chicago Bears?

With the Niners coming off a season where they were one score away from their second Super Bowl appearance in the last three years, head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch have high expectations for their squad. Although the 49ers were able to finish with a 10-7 record last season and make it as far as the NFC Championship where they would lose to the eventual Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams, San Francisco started last season with a 3-5 record. It took an overtime victory over the Rams in Week 18 to make the playoffs and surely the Niners would like to start this season stronger than 2021.

In Week One of the 2022 regular season, we’ll see the 49ers travel to Chicago to take on the Bears in a battle of young quarterbacks on teams with two separate trajectories. On paper, the Niners come in as one of the best teams in the league, as the Bears are fully entrenched in a rebuild under first-year coach Matt Eberflus and general manager Ryan Poles.

Niners Empire Staff Predictions and Analysis

Jake Frankel

Score prediction: 49ers defeat Bears 34-10

Quite simply, the 49ers should blow the Bears out. Chicago is simply not close to the level San Francisco is. I expect the Niners to take advantage of a Bears defense that lost Khalil Mack this past offseason with a mix of pounding the rock with their stable of running backs and looking for deep play-action passes to shake things up.

The 49ers’ defense is going to set the tone for the season with a dominating performance by a swarming front seven and improved secondary by wreaking havoc on second-year QB Justin Fields. Nick Bosa should singlehandedly wreck the Bears’ offensive game plan under a newly constructed Bears offensive line.

Bold prediction: On the first play of the game I look for Kyle Shanahan to call play action and for Lance to target rookie speedster Danny Gray on a go route to signify the new era of Niners football under new starting QB Trey Lance by completing a deep bomb.

Chris Polo

Score prediction: 49ers defeat Bears 31-10

With Super Bowl aspirations, the 49ers will look to start the 2022 season strong. Facing a Chicago Bears team in rebuild mode, San Francisco will win by at least three scores and dominate on both ends of the ball.

Deebo Samuel, who was the subject of a well-publicized trade request in the offseason, will kick off his new contract by scoring two touchdowns and finishing the day with a minimum of 130-total yards.

On the opposite side of the ball, the Niners’ defense will have a minimum of five sacks and Nick Bosa will have two of them by himself. San Francisco’s defense will also force at least three Chicago turnovers in the victory, spoiling Bears head coach Matt Eberflus’ debut.

Bold Prediction: The Niners’ defense will suffocate the Bears’ offense and Trey Lance will come up on top of the second-year quarterback battle.

Kevin McKelligan

Score prediction: 49ers defeat Bears 31-13

Offensively, Trey Lance will have a very good passing day with 275-passing yards and two touchdowns. On the ground, Lance will show off a new aspect of the offense by rushing for 40 yards with rushing one touchdown. Most importantly, Lance will have zero turnovers.

Defensively, prize-free agent signing Charvarius Ward from the Chiefs, will not allow more than four catches to second-year wideout Darnell Mooney in his Niners debut. The defense as a whole will not give up more than 230 yards of total offense.

Bold Prediction: Trey Lance will show off his immense talent with three total touchdowns.
