The Ravens Defeat The Jets 24-9 In Week One
The Ravens kicked off their season with a win on Sunday against the New York Jets. Here’s a recap of the action following the team’s victory.
After a slow start, the Baltimore Ravens went on the road into The Meadowlands to win 24-9 against the New York Jets. Despite the win, the rust within the Ravens’ offense was obvious. Prior to today, the starting offense saw zero minutes of live game action this preseason. The defense was shaky early on but seemed to settle as the game progressed. The defensive line, led by nose tackle Michael Pierce, was excellent. Here’s a recap of Sunday’s action:
The Ravens Defensive Line Shows Great Promise In Week One
One word for this position group: Wow. The defensive line played extremely well today. Nose tackle Michael Pierce was present in the run game and made Joe Flacco’s life miserable today in the pass rush. The big fellas up front were collapsing the pocket and putting immense pressure on former Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco.
Third-year defensive tackle Justin Madubuike had an impressive showing. He was stout against the run and was pressuring Flacco all game long. Alongside Madubuike was the elder statesman of the group, Calais Campbell. Early in the game, the aforementioned linemen were doing their best to hit Flacco if they couldn’t get to him for a sack. Campbell made his presence felt and looked to be fresh in the rotation that Mike Macdonald utilized.
Backup nose tackle Broderick Washington played very well in rotational duties. He had a sack on Joe Flacco negated due to a Kyle Fuller penalty. This was an overall impressive showing while missing their stud defensive tackle Travis Jones due to injury.
What A Day For Devin Duvernay In The Ravens’ First Game
Devin Duvernay wasted little time showing why he is going to be an integral part of the Ravens’ offense this year. Once the offense found its groove, Lamar Jackson connected on two touchdown passes to Duvernay, the second sealing the blowout victory. Duvernay finished the day with 52 yards on four catches with two touchdowns.

With so much doubt about the receiving corps heading into the season, Duvernay’s performance was a welcome sight. Fellow wide-out Rashod Bateman finished his day with 59 yards and a touchdown. The Jets’ defense managed to defend Mark Andrews rather well. Andrews didn’t find the end zone today but managed to make a few catches for a first down. With Hollywood Brown now an Arizona Cardinal and Andrews being taken out of the offense, Lamar Jackson proved today that he has faith in his group of pass catchers. This showing by Jackson — despite failing to reach a contract extension with the Ravens — could be a sign of a big season incoming.
Injury News & Notes Following The Ravens Week One Win
After a long and grueling journey back to an NFL field in a meaningful game, you can’t help but feel awful for left tackle Ja’Wuan James. After the game, head coach John Harbaugh confirmed that James had torn his Achilles and will miss the rest of the season. Cornerback Kyle Fuller went down late in the game holding his left knee and the extent of his injury is not known as of this writing. Fuller was injured when Jets wide receiver Elijah Moore pushed Fuller resulting in an offensive pass interference call.
Marcus Williams had a great debut at free safety. Williams picked off an errant Joe Flacco throw and took the ball deep into Jets territory that resulted in a Justin Tucker field goal. He was also a key to the Ravens’ front four creating pressure and sack opportunities. Williams finished the game with a team-leading ten tackles.
Pass rusher Justin Houston shined early in the game. Houston finished the game with three tackles to go along with his first sack of the year. The restful preseason seemed to be beneficial to the 33-year-old EDGE linebacker. Bookend RUSH linebacker Odafe Oweh was rather quiet. The pass rush duo has their work cut out for them next week at home versus the Miami Dolphins.
