The Patriots “Battle Of The Jones” Intensifies In Week Four

The Patriots’ battle of the Jones is heating up, but how are they all faring after a week four game in which three were heavily involved?

The group playing today was down to three, of course, due to Mac’s ankle injury. Cornerback Jonathan Jones has played at times like a shutdown cornerback and was heavily involved on Sunday. And finally, the impact of rookie cornerbacks Jack Jones and Marcus Jones significantly grew.

Patriots Cornerback Jonathan Jones Struggled In Green Bay

Cornerback Jonathan Jones had an inconsistent game against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday. He played decently in the first half of Sunday’s game, and limited the options of Rodgers and the offense, and was a significant reason that Rodgers struggled so much in the first hald. However, as Rodgers awoke the beast, Jon started to falter a bit.

Early in the third quarter on Green Bay’s first possession in the second half, he gave up a 32-yard pass to Allen Lazard who was streaking down the sidelines and was simply not able to keep up. Later in the fourth quarter, he gave up a game-tying 13-yard touchdown to Packer’s wide receiver Romeo Doubs that forced overtime.

The Patriots’ cornerback would finish the game with five total tackles, four of them being solo tackles, and one pass deflection, and while he certainly did some good things, he didn’t play up to the standard he was establishing early.

Both Patriots Rookie Cornerbacks Shone In Sunday’s Loss

I have to say,, rookie cornerback Jack Jones is starting to show elite talent for the Patriots. He started the game with a fumble recovery on the Packers’ first offensive series. Then he made the play of the day on defense Sunday with a 40-yard pick-six off Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers with only 17 seconds left in the first half to put the Patriots up by three. He followed that up in the second half of Sunday’s game with solid play and would finish the day with seven total tackles – three of them being solo – and one pass deflection, and displayed his speed, athleticism and ability to be a ball hawk.

Special teams play would get a huge jump as well on Sunday from Marcus Jones. He would handle most of the kick returns in the game and shined. Marcus had four returns for a total of 111 yards averaging 27.8 yards per return with his longest of the day being 37 yards. His explosiveness when he touched the ball showed the Patriots why they drafted him out of Houston in college, and the way Myles Bryant is playing, we will likely see Marcus on the secondary very soon. Both Jones rookies showed they have bright futures in this league and with New England.

Who Of The Jones Is Best Set Up To Perform Well On Sunday?

Will rookie cornerback Jack Jones continue to show he is a true elite cornerback against the Detroit Lions this Sunday? Will rookie cornerback Marcus Jones continue to be the spark plug on special teams this week against Detroit? Can veteran Jonathan Jones return to form and be the shutdown corner the Patriots believe he can be? Detroit comes to Foxboro with some talent on offense that the Patriots have to account for.

The Lions have weapons very capable of testing both Jack Jones and Jonathon Jones. On the receiver end, have DJ Chark and Amon-Ra St Brown, both very capable of making big plays. Tight End TJ Hockensen and RB D’Andre Swift are also potent pass-catching weapons. The secondary will be thoroughly tested by an offense that has put up a lot of points this season.

In Conclusion

For the Patriots to win on Sunday and save the season against the Lions they will need a huge game from rookie Marcus Jones on special teams. New England will also need big plays from Cornerbacks Jonathan Jones and Jack Jones. Moving on down the road they will also need starting quarterback Mac Jones to be healthy and return to last year’s form to be a playoff team. The group of Jones is proving to be an integral part of this team and will be an important determiner of how the Patriots do.
