The NBA Refs Make Fans Want To Riot
What is the issue with these refs? There's always a bad call and players get punished for reacting.
Are The Refs At Fault?
Recently the New York Knicks played against the Houston Rockets and lost in a close 103-105 game. The controversy comes at the final moments of the game when Jalen Brunson fouled Aaron Holiday. The game was tied 103-103 and that foul cost the Knicks the game. However, was it really a foul? According to the Chief, Ed Malloy, it was the wrong call.
Do Refs Abuse Their Power?
Countless times NBA players, specifically the star players are given technical fouls or are ejected after arguing with a referee over specific calls. Players such as Jayson Tatum, Nikola Jokic, and Jaren Jackson Jr have been ejected from games earlier in the season due to no calls. It is frustrating when people's favorite players are ejected in the middle of the game because referees get sensitive.
Another issue is players getting fined after speaking their opinion about the refs. Earlier Anthony Edwards had some comments about the officiating which ended up costing him $40,000.
The referees are human and mistakes will be made. However, the NBA has many different camera angles and they take between 5-10 minutes to review either an out-of-bounds call or foul. There should be little to no excuses when getting the call wrong, especially with the advanced technology. Why are players punished when the refs make the bad calls? These bad calls can determine the outcome of the game at times as seen with the Knicks and Rockets game.
Are The Referees Corrupted?
There are times when fans wonder if the refs are corrupted. The notorious referee Tim Donaghy was arrested back in 2007 after it was figured out that he was gambling on games he officiated. In the documentary "Untold: Operation Flagrant Foul" Donaghy admitted that referees may target specific players they have a vendetta against.
The most well-known ref and player rivalry is between Scott Foster and Chris Paul. Fans believe that Foster will deliberately make Chris Paul's team lose or eject Paul from games.
Can The Issue Be Fixed?
Referees need to be more understanding that these players are in a competitive game, especially when it is a close game in the final moments. No calls or false calls can determine whether a team is in the playoffs or not. When these players are competing against each other anything they do not agree with can cause them to go livid, especially the highly competitive players. If a referee makes a mistake the NBA players should not be punished for addressing their mistakes.
