The Las Vegas Raiders Hope To Score Big With This Acquisition

When the Las Vegas Raiders unceremoniously dumped quarterback Derek Carr, the question in Sin City was “what is next”? That answer came on Monday morning when the Silver and Black signed the much-maligned Jimmy Garoppolo, late of the San Francisco 49ers.

What The Raiders Get: Garoppolo By The Numbers.

Garoppolo, who lost a majority of 2022 due to injury, posted respectable numbers: 2,437 yards (23rd), 16 touchdowns (tied-19), four interceptions (2nd), QBR 54.3 (16th).

For a career, he has played in 74 games. He has completed 1,167 yards on 1,726 attempts for a total of 14,289 yards. His completion percentage is 67.6, with 42 interceptions. His overall win/loss record is 53-21. Garoppolo has a postseason record of 4-2, having been to one Super Bowl as well as two NFC Championship Games.

It feels like Jimmy G. Has been on the hot seat in San Francisco for too many years. He’s either been on the trading block or relegated to the bench in favor of Trey Lance. In 2022, Lance went down to injury and the Niners saw the emergence of Brock Purdy, who got them to the NFC Championship Game before being injured.

On Monday, The Associated Press would report that Jimmy Garoppolo agreed to a three-year, $67.5 million contract with the Las Vegas Raiders. The reaction has been mixed from Raider Nation but he is also a good option given his ties to Josh McDaniels in New England.

The Raiders were terrible this last season. In a division many picked to be a bloodbath, the AFC West was all Kansas City with the Los Angeles Chargers being the only two teams who made the postseason. The Denver Broncos finished 5-12 overall and 1-5 in the division. The Raiders were only 6-11 and 3-3 in the West.

During six seasons in San Francisco, Garoppolo never made a Pro Bowl and has thrown for more than 20 TDs only one time. But is he the long-term fix for a team in desperate need of a starting quarterback? The Raiders can still draft a high-quality starting quarterback with the seventh overall pick in this upcoming draft.

Question here is whether the Raiders still take a QB at seventh overall pick and, if so, does Jimmy G know that. https://t.co/iCC0OFbjGW — Andrew Brandt (@AndrewBrandt) March 13, 2023

The conventional wisdom is that Jimmy G. is not a long-term answer in Las Vegas. That may be true, but winning can cause a fan to have a short memory. In the AFC West, the Raiders can make some noise, but fans are well aware that the Broncos will be better with Sean Payton, the Chargers have a new offensive coordinator, and the Chiefs are the reigning NFL champions.

In the gambling capital of the universe, Las Vegas needs to hit the trifecta: McDaniels has to prove he is an NFL head coach, Garoppolo needs to stay healthy and not allow the Raiders to finish in the cellar, and owner Mark Davis needs to show fans of the Silver and Black he can build a winning organization.
