The Jets Should Not Hesitate To Acquire An Old Friend
The rumors and speculation have been discussed for months, but now the day has come that current Raider and more importantly, former Packers WR Davante Adams is officially on the trade block.
New York Has Nothing To Lose
This should be an easy decision for Jets’ GM Joe Douglas and HC Robert Saleh. The team has not made the playoffs in 13 years and the pressure is on after this staff seemingly chose to give up on the 2023 season after losing Aaron Rodgers to injury.
While I don’t believe the organization will part ways with Douglas or Saleh during the season, if this team continues its playoff drought, it’s almost certain the current braintrust will be out of a job come January.
Last week’s matchup vs. Denver only exemplified Robert Saleh’s struggles as a head coach. New York committed 15 penalties this past Sunday with 13 of them being accepted. The Jets proved at times last year how undisciplined they could be and with Saleh still at the helm, we saw much of the same.
A healthy Rodgers in 2024 means that the Jets are back to operating like a “win-now” team. There’s no telling how much longer the four-time MVP will continue his NFL career, so New York should act accordingly.
Within reason, Douglas and Saleh should not be overly concerned with the team’s future assets, with the window to win being so small. Acquiring Davante Adams will not only bring in another known companion for Aaron Rodgers but will also introduce a new dynamic to this Jets’ offense.
The Benefit Of Davante Adams
We saw how surgical this offense can be in the team's week three win vs. the Patriots, however, the other end of the spectrum was on display this past Sunday. Despite leading in total yards, plays, and time of possession, New York failed to score a touchdown vs. Denver, losing the game by a score of 10-9.
It’s a concerning loss no doubt about it, but that doesn’t mean that I am concerned just yet. We’re only a month into the season and it’s simply just too small of a sample size to label what this team is yet in either direction.
On an individual note, third-year receiver Garrett Wilson has had a slow start to his 2024 campaign. An Adams addition would seemingly change how the Jets use Wilson moving forward. Garrett would most likely be moved to the slot with Davante and Mike Williams lining up on the outside. That cast at wide receiver seems like something that could only be put together in a video game, but with the recent news, it is now well within the realm of possibilities.
It’s time for the Jets to remedy some of the early season struggles by pairing your future Hall of Fame quarterback with his former Pro-Bowl wide receiver. Adams has played in 108 games with Aaron Rodgers totaling 622 catches for 7,590 yards and 69 touchdowns. Reestablishing that connection should only act as a positive in New York’s offensive attack. Buckle up Jets fans because this situation seems like it could be resolved sooner rather than later.
