The Dolphins Release Six-Year NFL Veteran Heading Into A Free Agency
The Miami Dolphins have made tough decisions this off-season, releasing defensive end Emmanuel Ogbah, cornerback Xavien Howard, and letting defensive tackle Christian Wilkins hit the free agent market. Sadly for Dolphins fans, it just didn't stop with those three names.
On Tuesday, Adam Schefter from ESPN reported that the Dolphins will release starting linebacker Jerome Baker.
Schefter stated, "The two sides discussed a restructured contract but couldn't agree. The Dolphins left the door open to him coming back if he chooses."
Baker has been part of the Dolphins organization since 2018, when he was selected 73rd in the third round.
The 27-year-old spent six seasons in Miami and was very durable. He played at least 16 or 17 games in his first five seasons and then 13 in 2023 when he suffered a knee injury in late December.
The Dolphins are making changes throughout their defense this offseason, and they even let go of defensive coordinator Vic Fangio.
New defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver will have a lot on his plate this upcoming season, and it will have to happen without critical veterans like Ogbah, Howard, and possibly Wilkins and Baker.
Miami might be going full rebuild mode on the defense, but they also have a huge decision to make at quarterback. Starter Tua Tagovailoa will be playing on his fifth-year option this season and will be a free agent at year's end, and the Dolphins have to figure out what they will be willing to pay to sign him to an extension.
The Dolphins have many issues over the next couple of months. Hopefully, they figure it out because last year, they had the AFC East all locked up, and then they let the Buffalo Bills take it from them late in the season, leading to an early playoff exit for the Dolphins.
