The Cowboys QB Controversy Is Officially Over

For weeks, Dallas Cowboys fans have been going back and forth about whether Cooper Rush should remain the starting quarterback or if Dak Prescott should return as the starter. After the Cowboys’ 26-17 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, it’s clear Prescott should be the guy.

It is noteworthy to say that this isn’t about making Cooper Rush look bad as he should get a ton of credit for what he did in five games as the starter. Rush showed great poise and was able to lead the Cowboys to fourth-quarter game-winning drives against the Cincinnati Bengals and the New York Giants. Despite his bad showing against the Eagles, he’s still sixth in the NFL in QBR with 61.3 and tied for seventh in interceptions with three.

Unfortunately though, Rush has to have some kind of judgment for how he played in the Eagles game as he had a QB Rating of 37.3, throwing for only 181 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions. He struggled to throw accurate passes to receivers in the first half due in part to the pressure Philadelphia’s front four was applying. While the second half looked better, he still didn’t play the same as he had in the previous four games.

With all of that being said, there should be an appreciation for what Rush accomplished. He became the first quarterback in Cowboys’ history to win his first five starts. He didn’t throw an interception in any of the first four games he started this season. To top it off, when most people thought, the Cowboys were going to fall apart without Prescott, Rush went 4-1 as the starter. A tip to the cap for a quarterback who almost didn’t make the roster due to his poor play in the preseason.

Signs Point Towards Cowboys Welcoming Back Dak Prescott

Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy has been saying for the last few weeks that Prescott has to be a full participant in practice all week before he can return as the starter. Prescott started throwing in practice to receivers last week with many saying that he looked good. After the Eagles game, Prescott told the media that he is expecting to return to the lineup this Sunday against the Detroit Lions.

“That’s my plan. Obviously, got to see the doc, but, yeah, that’s kind of my plan.” Dallas Cowboys Quarterback Dak Prescott

It’s been a long journey for Prescott since injuring his thumb in the season-opening loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Prescott got surgery after the game to start his recovery process. It wasn’t until their win against the New York Giants that fans saw him throw the football for the first time since injuring it. He has been pushing through the media to try to get back on the field. Those hopes from Prescott seem to be pretty much becoming a reality unless something drastically happens this week during practice.

While the Cowboys have been winning games and being successful, the offense has not looked as efficient with Rush as they did with Prescott in previous games. A lot of that has to do with Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator Kellen Moore changing the offensive style from a pass-heavy to balanced. It remains to be seen if that will change at all with Prescott returning to the lineup.

Regardless of how the Cowboys’ offense style looks, Dallas fans should be encouraged about how the team has looked in Prescott’s absence. They were able to open up the running game more with Ezekiel Elliot and Tony Pollard. Even in the passing game, the emergence of Noah Brown has given the Cowboys another option in the passing game other than CeeDee Lamb and Michael Gallup.

Prescott is going to be an instant upgrade to the offense due to his ability to use his legs to make plays and his ability to throw it deep. He’s already shown that he can lead the Cowboys to victories and playoff appearances so he’s a proven winner. As long as he can be the quarterback who led Dallas to the playoffs last season, the Cowboys are in a good position to make a deep playoff run this season.
