Texas Makes A Major Coaching Decision
Texas football coach Steve Sarkisian has just received a massive contract extension that will make him one of the highest-paid coaches in the nation. The University of Texas System Board of Regents is set to approve a four-year extension for Sarkisian that will run through the 2030 season and increase his annual salary to more than $10 million.
Sarkisian was hired by Texas in 2021 after serving as Alabama’s offensive coordinator and has turned the Longhorns into a national powerhouse in just three seasons. He led Texas to a 12-2 record in 2023 including 8-1 in Big 12 play, winning the conference title and reaching the College Football Playoff for the first time in school history as the fourth seed. Texas lost to Washington in the semifinal, but Sarkisian’s success earned him the admiration of the fans and the administration.
“I said it when I came here three years ago, this is a dream job for me,” Sarkisian said in a statement. "It’s a destination job, and I’m fired up every day to be the head coach at The University of Texas. We’re thrilled with what we’ve been able to accomplish and proud of the culture we’ve built and the way our players have grown — on and off the field.
Sarkisian’s new deal will rank him third among all college football coaches in average annual salary, behind only Clemson’s Dabo Swinney and Georgia’s Kirby Smart. He will also receive a one-time payment of $300,000 by April 1 and various performance incentives, including up to $1.25 million for winning the national championship.
Sarkisian’s extension comes as Texas prepares to move to the SEC, where it will face tougher competition and higher expectations. The Longhorns have a challenging schedule in 2024, which includes games against Michigan, Oklahoma and Georgia. Sarkisian will have to prove that he can sustain his success and keep Texas among the elite programs in the country.
