Super Bowl 57 Jersey Choices: One Team With The Early Advantage?

The Super Bowl 57 matchup features the two best NFL teams from the 2022 season. The Philadelphia Eagles represent the NFC and the Kansas City Chiefs represent the AFC. Both teams finished the season with a 14-3 record, so it is about as even as it gets on who might win. However, after the Philadelphia Eagles selected to wear their Midnight green jerseys for the game, does this give one side the advantage?

Since the Eagles are considered the “home team” this year, they were able to select which jersey color they wanted to wear. They decided on their traditional home green color forcing the Chiefs to wear their road white jerseys. Historically, white has been the lucky color on gameday.

Super Bowl Teams Wearing White Win Overwhelmingly

There have been 56 completed Super Bowl games. The team that came out victoriously wore their white jersey in 36 of them, which comes out to 64% of the time. The team in white has had even more success in recent years. From the years 2005 to 2017, the team wearing their home color won just one time. The lone exception was the Green Bay Packers in SB 45. However, the team that broke this streak was the Philadelphia Eagles who wore their green in 2018 and won.

In the four Super Bowls following the Eagles’ win, the white jersey came out on top in three of them. The only time in the four it did not was when the Chiefs won in their red jerseys three years ago in their victory over the San Francisco 49ers. The following two winners, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Los Angeles Rams, hoisted the Lombardi Trophy in their white jerseys.

What About The Two Teams In It Now?

The Philadelphia Eagles perhaps went with the green jerseys because of their history. In their three all-time Super Bowl appearances, Philly has worn their green jersey every time. They lost Super Bowl 15 to the Oakland Raiders wearing Kelly green and Super Bowl 39 to the New England Patriots in Midnight green. The franchise finally won their first ever Lombardi Trophy in the green jerseys over the Pats in Super Bowl 52.

The Kansas City Chiefs have played in four Super Bowls. They lost to the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl I wearing white but won Super Bowl IV in their red jersey. The franchise did not have another championship appearance for 50 years, which was the 2019 season where they won in their red jersey. In their loss to the Bucs two years ago, the Chiefs were also wearing red.

In Conclusion

The white jersey team often has more success than not, but previous history of these two teams in the big game tell us that anything is possible. The Eagles are 1-2 in their green jersey, while the Chiefs are 0-1 in their white jersey, but 2-2 all-time in the Super Bowl.

The recent luck of wearing white might put the Chiefs at an advantage, but they have only ever hoisted the trophy in their red jersey. Meanwhile the Eagles won their only Super Bowl in midnight green so maybe this could be their good luck charm once again. The game is just days away and we can’t wait.
