State Of The Eagles’ Quarterback Room Entering Training Camp

The Philadelphia Eagles will go into the 2022 season without much change at the top of the quarterback depth chart. Jalen Hurts will look to solidify himself as a franchise QB while Gardner Minshew will be ready as his backup. Outside of these two guys, who are the other quarterbacks are on the roster? Here is a state of the quarterback room entering training camp.

Jalen Hurts

Jalen Hurts was a surprise draft pick by the Eagles in 2020. He later replaced a struggling Carson Wentz as the starting quarterback toward the end of the Eagles’ disappointing 4-11-1 2020 season. Eagles’ management then fired head coach Doug Pederson and traded Carson Wentz away. 2021 was going to be the Jalen Hurts experiment.

Hurts had an up and down season in 2021 but got the Eagles into the playoffs as a seventh seed. In 2021, the former Alabama and Oklahoma star threw for 3,100 yards, 16 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. He was dangerous on his legs by rushing for nearly 800 yards and ten touchdowns. This was enough to earn the confidence of the coaching staff and management to remain the starter in 2022.

Jalen Hurts will go into 2022 with an improved supporting cast around him. The Eagles traded with the Titans for wide receiver A.J. Brown. Brown is already one of the best receivers in football. Hurts will also have Dallas Goedert, Devonta Smith, Quez Watkins, and free agent pickup Zach Pascal to throw the ball to. This is one of the best wide receiver groups in recent memory for the Eagles. 2022 will be a make or break season for Jalen Hurts’ future in Philadelphia but expect him to rise to the occasion.

Prediction: 16 starts, 3,900 passing yards, 22 passing touchdowns, eight interceptions, 800 rushing yards, 8 rushing touchdowns

Gardner Minshew

Minshew Mania hit Philadelphia last season as Gardner Minshew had an incredible performance against the Jets in Week 13. The Eagles are lucky to have a starting caliber quarterback as a backup.

Gardner Minshew’s NFL career started in Jacksonville. He threw for nearly 6,000 yards, 37 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions in 23 appearances for the Jaguars. The Eagles traded for Minshew to be the backup for Hurts right before the 2021 season began. He stepped in nicely in a big Week 13 win against the Jets. Minshew also started in Week 18 against the Cowboys as the Eagles rested their starters.

Hopefully Jalen Hurts will remain healthy all season, but Minshew would be a more than capable backup for the Eagles.

Prediction: 1 Start, 295 Yards, 2 Touchdowns

Reid Sinnett

Reid Sinnett played his college football at San Diego before going undrafted in 2020. He was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers but did not make the team during final roster cuts. On September 14, 2020, Sinnett signed with the Miami Dolphins to be on their practice squad. He dressed for two games later in the season but did not see any playing time.

In 2021, Sinnett entered the season on the Dolphins practice squad, but he was waived in October. The Eagles added him a couple days later to be the third string quarterback behind Hurts and Minshew. Sinnett will look to keep his spot as the third quarterback on the roster this season, but will face competition from undrafted rookie, Carson Strong.

Prediction: Practice Squad

Carson Strong

There is another Carson in Philadelphia, and he gives the Eagles an intriguing option at backup quarterback. Carson Strong was signed right after the draft as an undrafted free agent. He played his college football at Nevada.

In 2021 during his senior year, Strong threw for over 4,200 yards, 36 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. He helped lead Nevada to an 8-4 record and a bowl appearance. Strong won the Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year for the second straight year. Carson Strong was one of the top quarterback prospects in this year’s draft, but his injury history caused him to go undrafted. It will be exciting to see him this preseason compete with Reid Sinnett for the third string quarterback role.

Prediction: Third-string quarterback
