Rising Grizzlies Star Hit With Injury That Requires Surgery

GG Jackson, Grizzlies, Injury, Injured

The Memphis Grizzlies' injury woes continue, even with the 2024-25 NBA season still nearly two months away.

The team announced on Monday, August 30, that incoming second-year forward GG Jackson II broke the fifth metatarsal in his right foot while playing basketball in Dallas last Friday, August 27.

"While playing basketball outside of Dallas on Aug. 27, after attempting a contested layup, Jackson II experienced an unstable landing on his right foot," the team said in a statement.

The Grizzlies also confirmed that Jackson II will undergo surgery due to the injury, but they did not state a recovery timetable for the former South Carolina Gamecock. An update will be provided after the surgery by Wednesday, September 4.

Jackson's injury is another blow for the Grizzlies, who had a disappointing 2023-24 season due to injuries to key players such as Ja Morant, Steven Adams, Brandon Clarke, Marcus Smart, and Desmond Bane, all of whom missed significant time on the court.

After finishing as the second seed in the Western Conference in 2022-23, the Grizzlies struggled and failed to make the playoffs in 2023-24, finishing with a record of 27-55 and placing 13th in the West.

GG Jackson II's Sensational Rookie Season

Jackson was selected by the Grizzlies with the 45th overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, and he emerged as a bright spot for the team last season.

The 19-year-old was the youngest player in the entire NBA last season, and he was also arguably the biggest steal of his draft class so far, after averaging 14.6 points, 1.2 assists, and 4.1 rebounds in 48 games in his rookie year.

The 6-foot-9 forward was named to the 2023-24 NBA All-Rookie Second Team for his debut campaign, which included a career-high 44-point outing against the defending NBA champion Denver Nuggets in the final game of their regular season on April 14.
