Ranking The Great AFC Quarterbacks For 2023

Last week Good Moring Football host Kyle Brandt released his AFC QB Tiers, and it didn’t go so well for him. He had Patrick Mahomes in tier one by himself which you can’t argue, but he had one quarterback Trevor Lawrence sitting in tier six, and there are only seven tiers.

Tier 1

I will follow Brandt’s tiers while making my rankings, and we will see where we agree and disagree.

Brandt: Patrick Mahomes

Mine: Patrick Mahomes

I agree 100% with Brandt on this one. Mahomes should be all by himself in tier one. He has two super bowls and two league MVPs, and he is on pace to be the best quarterback to ever play the sport. Every quarterback in the league right now is chasing Mahomes, and Mahomes is chasing guys who are no longer playing like Tom Brady and Joe Montana.

Tier 2

Brandt: Joe Burrow and Josh Allen

Mine: Joe Burrow, Josh Allen, Aaron Rodgers

Burrow right now is the second-best quarterback in the league, and Allen is not that far behind him. Burrow has been to two AFC title games and one Super Bowl in his first three seasons and has a long career ahead of him.

I feel like the last three seasons Allen has been favored to win the MVP award and he falls off the last few weeks of the season, and so do the Buffalo Bills. Allen is very talented and does everything for the team including playing running back.

Rodgers is new to the AFC after being traded to the New York Jets last month, and he might have had a rough 2022 season in Green Bay, but I feel like it was just time for him to leave and go elsewhere to get a new breath of fresh air.

Tier 3

Brandt: Aaron Rodgers, Lamar Jackson, Justin Herbert

Mine: Lamar Jackson, Justin Herbert, Trevor Lawrence

We both agree on Jackson and Herbert, and there is no reason why they should be lower on this list. I have Lawrence in tier three after his great ending to the 2022 season. I thought Lawrence looked like he could be one of the best quarterbacks coming down the stretch last season.

Tier 4

Brandt: Russell Wilson, Deshaun Watson

Mine: Russell Wilson, Deshaun Watson

This is the tier of talented quarterbacks that had a rough 2022 season in new places. Wilson was traded to Denver and was a disaster and Watson was traded to Cleveland was suspended for the first 11 games and looked horrible in the six games he played.

Wilson will be in the Hall of Fame one day, but his career could be coming to an end soon if he played exactly like he did in 2022. Watson is still very young and talented, and there is no reason why he shouldn’t be a top-five quarterback in the AFC this season.

Tier 5

Brandt: Jimmy Garoppolo

Mine: Tua Tagovailoa, Ryan Tannehill, Jimmy Garoppolo

Brandt never rated Tannehill since he ranked new Titans quarterback Will Levis, but until he wins the job, I will still treat Tannehill as the starter in Tennessee.

Do you agree with @KyleBrandt’s AFC QB tier list? 🤔 (via @gmfb) pic.twitter.com/4k6G2gUYJG — NFL Network (@nflnetwork) May 3, 2023

Tagovailoa showed a lot of progress last season, but injuries are always going to be a concern with him. If he can’t stay healthy, he will be out of the league quickly.

Garoppolo is an average quarterback who wins games, but he also is always injured. You know what you are going to get from him every Sunday.

Tier 6

Brandt: Kenny Pickett, Mac Jones, Tua Tagovailoa, Trevor Lawrence

Mine: Kenny Pickett, Mac Jones

I have no idea what Brandt is thinking putting Lawrence in tier six. He was a star coming down the stretch last season.

Pickett and Jones make sense. Jones had a good rookie year and then fell off in year two and Pickett had a rookie season with some ups and downs but looks like he can play in this league.

Tier seven was just all rookie quarterbacks that were just drafted three weeks ago so they haven’t played a game yet.

The AFC is loaded with quarterbacks and if you’re an AFC team right now you better make sure you have your franchise signal caller or you will not be able to compete in the AFC.
