Ranking The Browns Position Groups: Wide Receivers
In this multi-part series, we will look deeper at each position group on the Cleveland Browns roster. Today we will be covering the wide receivers.
NFL preseason week two is about to get underway, which means we are a lot closer to 53-man rosters being announced. The Browns have loads of talent on their roster; some position groups are much deeper than others. Some position groups will need to step up for the Browns to have a great season, and others might just need an upgrade to give the Browns a chance.
For this exercise, I’m going to rank Brown’s position groups from worst to best using quarterbacks, running backs, wide receivers, tight ends, offensive line, defensive ends, defensive tackles, linebackers, safeties, cornerbacks, and special teams.
There will be a new article each day ranking the specific position group with who is expected to make the 53-man roster and the outlook for the position group for the 2022 season.
I am starting with the first position group. I have picked the wide receivers. By far, I think the wide receivers are the worst position group on the Browns, and they have way too many unknowns for anybody to feel comfortable about this group.
Amari Cooper
The Brown’s wide receiver room must be the least impressive position group on the entire roster. The Browns acquired pro bowl wide receiver, Amari Cooper from the Dallas Cowboys this offseason, and he might be the only receiver that Browns fans can count on this season. Cooper is a great route runner who knows how to get open. He can sometimes be the quarterback’s best friend, and Cooper should have an excellent season.

Donovan Peoples-Jones
Looking at the rest of the wide receivers kind of gets a little scary. The Browns are hoping that Donovan Peoples-Jones can make another leap in his third season and be that number two wide receiver to go along with Cooper. Peoples-Jones sometimes shows some great talent, but he needs to stay consistent for this offense to go where it wants to go. I believe Peoples-Jones will develop into a solid receiver this season and help whoever is playing quarterback.

Rest Of The Receivers
The rest of the receiver room is a giant mess. The Browns lost their kick and punt returner, Jakeem Grant, to a torn Achilles last week, and he also was going to have some role in the receiving game.
The second-year receiver from Auburn, Anthony Schwartz, hasn’t gotten off to a great start this preseason. He dropped two passes in the first preseason game vs. the Jacksonville Jaguars last week, and Browns fans already want him gone, and the regular season hasn’t even started yet.
David Bell, the Brown’s 99th pick in the 2022 NFL Draft,th pick in the 2022 NFL Draft was supposed to come into camp with some high hopes. He ended up starting camp on the active PUP list, and he has been able to see some practice time but did not play in the first preseason game.
Bell had a great 2021 season at Purdue, and he ended up winning Big Ten receiver of the year and was a finalist for the Biletnikoff Award that is given to the best receiver in college football. Bell did not test great at the combine, making him fall on draft boards. Bell has great talent on the field, and I think the Browns will be able to get it out of him, but he needs to see an NFL game before I can start trusting him.

Michael Woods II was a sixth-round pick by the Browns this year, and he got off to a great start at camp. The former Oklahoma receiver was very exciting to watch at the beginning of camp. Still, early on in camp, he ended up being sidelined with a hamstring injury and has not seen action since.

The Browns also have Javon Wims in camp, and he could realistically be a real option to make the Brown’s 53-man roster. Wims spent his first three seasons in the NFL with the Chicago Bears but didn’t have much production in any of those three seasons.
One name to watch out for is running back/wide receiver Demetric Felton. Felton can play that hybrid role, and I think losing Grant for the season gives Felton a roster spot on this football team since he looks to be taking over the returner role, and maybe he will take over whatever role Grant was going for to have in the offense.
Outlook For 2022
The outlook for Brown’s receivers in 2022 doesn’t look promising. If something happened to Amari Cooper and he was to miss some time, the Browns could be in a boatload of trouble. The Browns might be in the market for a veteran free agent wide receiver or even trade for one that might be getting cut from their team at the end of the preseason. I think the Browns need to take a severe look at this room and see what they can do to improve it before they head to Carolina for week one.
