Raiders Sign Former Pro Bowl Guard To A One-Year Deal
Adam Caplan of Pro Football Network has reported that the Las Vegas Raiders have signed veteran offensive lineman Cody Whitehair.
The Raiders have addressed many needs this offseason and will continue to address them in the NFL draft. Before that, Las Vegas may have filled one of those holes by signing former Pro Bowl offensive guard Cody Whitehair, previously of the Chicago Bears. The right guard position was held by Greg Van Roten last year, arguably the weakest part of the offensive line. After not re-signing Van Roten, the Raiders will try to fill the spot once again. In 2022, the position was also filled by a veteran (Alex Bars). With the addition of Whitehair, he will compete for the job.
Whitehair played college football at Kansas State and was drafted in the second round by the Chicago Bears in the 2016 NFL Draft. He has played for the Bears his entire career and has started 118 out of the 124 games he has played in. He was named to the Pro Football Writers Association All-Rookie Team in 2016 as a center after an injury to the team's starter in training camp. Whitehair continued to play center until the 2019 season where he moved around the line a bit, but by year's end, he was playing center again. Arguably, his best year was in 2019 when he played every offensive snap and was named to the NFL Pro Bowl.
How This Move Helps The Raiders
Bringing in Whitehair adds more veteran leadership to the offensive line that performed well last year at times, but injuries did not help that unit. With the offensive philosophy changing to a ground-and-pound type of offense, any added veterans will help this team get down and dirty in the trenches. Unless the team addresses the position in the draft, they will put another band-aid on the right guard position until they find a long-term answer to the problem.
