Patriots Suffer Blowout Loss To The Dolphins – Did Any Of The Jones Step Up?

It was a blowout loss for the Patriots on Sunday against the Miami Dolphins, with a scoreline of 20-7. Which one of the Jones, if any, stepped up on Sunday?

Did quarterback Mac Jones step up and have a great game? Was Jonathan Jones able to contain Miami’s top wide receiver Tyreek Hill? Did the rookies Marcus Jones and Jack Jones step up to help the team on Sunday? We will recap how these Jones did on Sunday in the loss to the Dolphins.

Mac Jones Struggled In The Loss To Miami In The Season Opener.

Second-year quarterback Mac Jones began the game looking fantastic as he led the Patriots down the field only to have the ball intercepted on a tipped pass. Then in the second quarter of the game quarterback Mac Jones took a violent hit on a blindside blitz by Brandon Jones in which he fumbled the ball that led to a touchdown by Miami as linebacker Melvin Ingram scooped it up to score the touchdown.

Jones would go on to struggle the rest of the day only throwing for one touchdown in the third quarter on a six-yard pass to running back Ty Montgomery. He would finish the day with twenty-one completions on thirty attempts for 213 yards with one touchdown and one interception. While it wasn’t the best start, it was obvious that he was held back by his offensive line and the Patriots play calling duo. It was also revealed after the game he suffered a back injury in the loss and had to have his post-game interview cancelled so he could have and x-ray.

Cornerback Jonathan Jones Showed He Could Go Toe To Toe With Tyreek Hill.

Coming into the game today the Patriot’s defense knew they would have their hands full with Tyreek Hill. The Patriots entrusted the responsibility of trying to shut down Hill to cornerback Jonathan Jones who was coming off an injury last season. Jones played a hard-fought game against Hill, limiting the wide receiver and not allowing a big play from him on Sunday. Hill only recorded eight receptions for ninety-four yards and zero touchdowns.

While Jonathan wasn’t able to completely shut Hill down, he did the best he could against that freakish speed and kept severe damage out of the question, and was likely the best performer out of the Jones quartet on the roster. His experience and football IQ will be very useful for the Patriots secondary this year.

How Did The Rookies Fare In Miami?

Now, we have the battle of the Jones rookies trying to make an impact on the team in week one. Despite him cracking the game day roster and being active the Patriots chose not to play Marcus Jones in the game. I think this was a mistake, as simply his speed and agility could have been a huge lift to the team, both in the secondary and on special teams.

Cornerback Jack Jones did play in the game and did a decent job making a few solid plays. One play in which it appeared cornerback Jack Jones made a game changing interception only to have Miami wide receiver Tyreek Hill rip it out of his hands. His combination of speed and affinity to the ball is scary for opposing offenses if he can translate his skills to the NFL level. Jack Jones is showing early potential to edge out Marcus for some playing time and to make an impact on the Patriots, but they will need more from him.

In Conclusion

Week one’s Battle of the Jones goes to Cornerback Jonathan Jones for slowing down down the Dolphins elite receiver Tyreek Hill and holding him scoreless. Team captain and leader of the offense Patriots quarterback Mac Jones needs to have a better game next week and the rest of the season if the team wants to compete for a playoff berth. Marcus and Jack Jones need to show they can contribute and help the team be competitive, but Jack got off to a good start on Sunday.
