Patriots Sign Extremely Versatile 2020 Draft Pick To Practice Squad

The Patriots have reportedly signed WR Lynn Bowden, Jr. to their practice squad. A third-year player who has already been on three different teams, Bowden will provide much-needed versatility and depth to a thin group of receivers.

The Patriots have signed a former college receiver and quarterback to their practice squad; and no, we are not talking about Julian Edelman.

The Patriots are signing former Raiders and Dolphins WR Lynn Bowden, Jr. to their practice squad, per source. He was one of the most versatile players in the country during his time at Kentucky and a 2020 third-round pick. — Field Yates (@FieldYates) September 1, 2022

Like Field Yates said in his Tweet, Lynn Bowden, Jr. hopefully can bring much-needed versatility and hype to the New England Patriots roster. With only four active receivers currently on the 53-man squad, a case in which Bowden sees the field in the regular season for the Patriots is not improbable.

Lynn Bowden, Jr. 2022 Season Preview With The Patriots

In 2020, Bowden had 28 receptions for 211 yards with an impressive 13 first downs receiving. Bowden additionally saw nine rushing attempts for 32 yards. All of this reliable production came with Bowden only starting four games and playing in a total of ten.

Bowden might not see the field as much as he did in Miami, but I won’t count out the idea of him seeing the field early on in the season. For starters, the absence of rookie WR Tyquan Thornton will be important to note. The Patriots only hold four current receivers on their 53-man roster, and calling up a few pass-catchers from the practice squad will be necessary until Thornton fully recovers. He is expected to be out for approximately two months with a collarbone injury.

#Patriots rookie WR Tyquan Thornton, who was ruled out last night with a shoulder injury, suffered a collarbone injury, sources say. The promising campaign is now put on hold, though based on his timetable, the injury to the speedster is not season ending.” Adam Schefter

The absence of WR/RB Ty Montgomery is also important to take into account. Bowden could see opportunities in the backfield for the Patriots. Considering Bowden got a small number of touches at the running back position in 2020 with Miami, it wouldn’t hurt for Belichick to see what Bowden has left in him.

It may seem like a bit of a long shot, but fans can only help but wonder if this signing could amount to another Julian Edelman situation. Edelman’s past and Bowden’s past sound eerily similar, and I imagine that the coaching staff of the Patriots will be noting Bowden’s reliability and versatility on a weekly basis, much like they did with Edelman when he was a young player.

I think that there are some talented players on our practice squad, meaning that not only is our depth deep on the 53-man, but the reserves are plenty capable to be elevated at a moment’s notice. Bowden and Humphrey have played in regular season action and Nixon has flashed promising talent numerous times during this off-season. The top-tier talent on the roster still needs some work, but I think the Patriots are one of the deepest teams in the league.
