Pat Freiermuth Hopes To Release The MUTH On Fantasy
Entering his third season, Pat Freiermth had a lot of hype amongst the fantasy community and was many people's favorite mid to late-round target at tight end. Unfortunately, Freiermuth did not meet expectations. He missed five games due to injury and was stuck in a poor offense that looked better with Mason Rudolph under center than second-year starter Kenny Pickett.
Entering his fourth season, Freiermuth looks to return to form and is set up to have the best season of his career. This off-season, the Steelers hired Arthur Smith to be the team's offensive coordinator and signed Russell Wilson as the team's starting quarterback. While Russ is certainly an upgrade from the trio of quarterbacks the Steelers rolled out on the field last season, Smith is the reason for excitement regarding Freiemuth’s fantasy outlook.
Last season, Freiermuth only had 32 catches for 308 yards and 2 touchdowns in his 12 games played, which was good for the 4th most receiving yards on the Steelers. Last season for the Falcons, 2 tight ends themselves had more yards than Freiermuth as Kyle Pitts had 667 yards himself, and backup tight end John Smith had 582 yards.
Just last season in Atlanta, 34.3% of the targets went to the tight ends, which bodes well for Freiermuth as he is seemingly the number 2 target in the Steelers offense only behind George Pickens. The possible downside is that Russell Wilson only targeted tight ends in 12.5% of his pass attempts last season. Still, the Broncos didn’t have a tight end like Freiermuth, and history shows Arthur Smith loves tight ends, which means Freiermuth is lined up for a breakout season if he stays healthy.
Our consensus projections for the Muth in the 2024 season are 44 receptions, 465 yards, and 5 touchdowns.
