Packers Defense Halts Justin Fields: Defensive Player Of The Game
The Chicago Bears traveled to Lambeau field and were left empty-handed. The Green Bay Packers beat the Bears 27-10 on Sunday Night Football.
After a lopsided loss in Week one to the Minnesota Vikings, the Packers’ defense was able to bounce back and limit the Bears to only one touchdown and one field goal. Defensive coordinator Joe Barry is an interesting guy on defense. One game he’ll write up a scheme that’ll knock your socks off and the next week he’ll screw up coverage so bad that pigs fall from the sky. After the Week one loss, cornerback Jaire Alexander was not shy when he called out Barry. The Week two defensive player of the game came down to raw talent versus scheme.
Packers Linebacker Takes Care Of Justin Fields
Bears quarterback Justin Fields will never forget Preston Smith after his two-sack performance Sunday night. Smith led the team in sacks and total tackles. He had four solo tackles and three assisted tackles. He was all over the field Sunday night in Green Bay and I bet he’s hungry for more, especially with an old pocket passer in Tom Brady. Five Packers players recorded at least five total tackles. That’s a stellar performance on the other side of the ball.
The defense was able to limit the Bears’ passing attack by holding Fields to just 11 total passes which he completed seven of them for 70 yards. He was also contained in his rushing attack as he averaged 2.5 yards on the ground but he was able to score a touchdown. In fact, it was the only touchdown of the day for Chicago. The Bears did their damage on the ground with David Montgomery, he was able to find holes in the Packers’ defense and exploit them. Hopefully, Joe Barry watches the film and assesses the issues with the rushing attack because we definitely have the talent.
Through two games this year, Preston Smith is on pace to set personal career highs with the Packers. Yes, some games will be higher than others depending on the game plan but this could be a year where two Packers linebackers rack up ten plus sack seasons. The other linebacker is Rashan Gary who joined the Packers the same year as Preston, in 2019.
Team Effort On Defense
It wasn’t just Preston Smith out there on the field sweeping up the Bears’ tears, it took everyone on the defense. Safety Darnell Savage led the team with six solo tackles, linebacker Rashan Gary had the other Justin Fields sack in the game, and cornerback Jaire Alexander had a late fourth-quarter interception that halted the Bears’ last chance to move down the field. Rookie linebacker and Week one defensive player of the game Quay Walker put up another good showing for the defense even though he left early in the game against the Vikings with a shoulder injury. Walker had three solo tackles and two assisted tackles.
The Packers’ defense held the Bears to 228 yards, the defense held their ground a lot better through the air versus the 180 yards that were racked up on the ground. The Bears were only one for seven on third down and failed their only attempt on fourth down which was a controversial goal-line stand. It was one of those instances where the referees called it one way and there was no substantial evidence to sway the call. If the referees would’ve called the shotgun sneak a touchdown, to begin with, it would’ve stood, as it was hard to tell where the ball was in the replay.
